For interest, the hydraulic roller we had the old Morel Comp Cam roller lifters on 15 years ago was 254/262 @ .050 and .628" lift. Ran perfectly quiet.

Same ones I have in a 455 I built back in April 2017.In my 69 bird,drive it every week with no issue.I think because all these lifters are assm by human beings we are all open to mistakes.So far so good with all of mine.Tom

Oil band is clearly not in the right location but didn't seem to matter, even on the 254/262 @ .050 cam with .628 lift. The new ones on the right are now in dad's 571 MR1 block. Correct oil band location on those, and are the Shavers. These are also nice and quiet on a pretty big custom hydraulic roller. |

I won't use comp lifters at all any more.
Bought a set 20 years ago and had nothing but problems with. I've heard nothing but bad about comp hyd-lifters sence I had my problem with them. I like there cams though. GT. |

Me too. If you shop around you can find the Crane hr’s for a bit less than Summits’ list price.

I've only used the Crane HR's twice and both of those engines are dead quiet cold, warm or fully warmed up and heat soaked. They also showed no indications whatsoever of having any sort of high RPM issues on the dyno.
Every single set of Comp HR's or any set of Morel lifters have had at least one "ticker" in the bunch whether cold, fully warmed up, or all the time. I also found that I had to set them with the plungers bottomed out then back up 1/2 turn vs going to zero lash and down 1/2 turn or so. This doesn't give them much room to make noise and reduces customer complaints, but what we are really doing is to "crutch" a fix vs simply using a par that's built to a higher standard in the first place. I've talked to numerous other engine builders and they have the same issues with Morel HR's. They are inconsistent on plunger to body clearances so the leak down rates are all over the Map. I've also noticed numerous changes to the HR's over the years. This includes plunger travel and how stiff the spring is under the plunger. Just heard the other day from a pretty good source that Isky will make HR's for Pontiac engines with bushed rollers. They are custom made and $1200 per set.......Cliff

The old half turn adjustment approach doesn't work on Comp Cams 857 lifters. I tried a few adjustments and 1-1/4 worked best. Which is consistent with the INSTRUCTIONS. Lifters require .050"-.100" preload (7/16-20 thread = .050"/turn).

The 1/2 turn method will have various lifter preload settings depending on which stud you're using, so have to pay attention to that.
Since most Pontiac guys here (least I hope so) run the big block chevy 7/16 stud which is 20 threads per inch. 1/2 turn on this stud will only give you .025" preload on the lifter. Generally lifters require a pinch more preload than that if you read instructions, but each lifter is different. In most cases .030 to .050" is what I see with the paperwork provided. |
