1962 brake booster
Has anyone added power disc front brakes to a 1962 full size Pontiac? What did you use for a master cylinder and brake booster? The previous owner added Ames's disc brake kit which DOESN'T come with a booster or master and it doesn't stop worth crap. I don't know what the booster is. It had a 1 inch bore master cylinder and I changed it to a 1&1/8 bore which works better. The brakes were so touchy before I could hardly drive it. Now it is ok at normal stopping but it won't stop at higher rates. I also can't lock any of the wheels. The booster looks to be very small. I tried to measure it and the diaphragm appears to be about 7" in diameter and about 8" overall. Master Power Brakes recommends a 9" dual diaphragm booster but it is $329 plus shipping and they can't guarantee it will fix the problem. Besides it's on backorder anyways. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to get the car good enough to drive to the POCI convention.

One more.
I can’t believe there is no one out there that has installed disc brakes on a 1962. |

I think there are fewer conversions on 62 and other full size from the era because of the popularity and look of the eight lug wheels many wish to retain. Also, 8-lug wheels with GOOD drums will stop nearly as well as disc brakes unless you are talking about repeated high speed stops like road racing. That tiny 7" booster looks to be suited for a 1000 lb car like a Morris Minor or an MGB. Not a 4000 lb. + full size GM car. A dual 9" would be a huge improvement.

So the consensus is that the 9” dual diaphragm booster will cure the problem?

Dual 9" is good down to 9 inches vacuum from personal experience.
If you can fab brackets a 1985-87 S10 BK code unit will work quite nicely. |

You may need standoff pieces. If the holes are around 3-1/4" square pattern you may not need them at all.
