65 Pontiac Lemans Saginaw steering gear upgrade/pitman arm.
My 65 had a 4.4 turns lock to lock steering gear and the steering wheel was fairly well centered. I decided to upgrade the gear to a 2.4 turns lock to lock.
The pitman arm is not parallel to the steering gear mounting flange when centered. The Saginaw pitman shafts have some spines deleted at 90 degree intervals. I have 3 similar Saginaw gears and the spine intervals on all three line up parallel to the mounting flange when the gears are centered. One has a pittman arm and when centered, it's parallel. But I can't use it, it's for a different style center link. I wonder if I have a mis-matched, or improperly machined pitman arm? Should I get a new one for this application, or do I need one a little different because of the faster ratio box ? All input appreciated. |
