68 Inner fender stencil
I was cleaning up my 68 LeMans drivers side inner fender when I noticed some faint lettering on the inside. It looks like a stencil that left a ghost image on the metal. Looks like GAL?? LAKES. Then 1888 or 1868 in the middle. Last word on the bottom line is USA. I'm 100% sure this is the original inner fender. The symbol in the upper left is a ladle for pouring molten steel/iron. Maybe the name of the foundry/stamping plant that made these??? Anyone ever seen this before.

Haven't seen that before but it is interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Friend of mine (gto4evr) said it was the manufacturers stamp. It was probably a new sheet and my inner fender got stamped where the stamp/decal was. The 1868 is really 18GA as in 18 gauge metal. Makes sense. Still curious who the actual manufacturer it is.

Yep, looks similar to stampings I have seen on sheets of plate I get from my metal supplier.

Also, don't forget that 68 inner fenders differ from 1969 inner fender wells! The easiest way to tell on a car is to reach your hand inside the wheel well from the fender, curl your fingers up and search for a protruding bump. This is a 1968 only feature
