Rocker Arm Covers Purpose?
Does anybody know the purpose of the rocker arm covers? A long time ago if I remember correctly I put 1.6 ratio rockers (also had a cam with .478 lift vs. stock .420) and either the rocker arm covers would not go back on because they hit the top of the rocker arms and I had to put taller valve covers on my car (69 GTO) because the stock covers wouldn't fit. I always thought the purpose of the rocker arm covers were to keep the oil from splashing around and it would drain down faster into the crankcase helping to prevent spinning the main bearings because not enough oil in the crankcase (one reason I have a 7 qt. oil pan.

The covers are actually "drippers" .. oil flow up the hollow pushrod, squirts out of the hole in the top of push rod cup on a stamped steel rocker and the cover causes this oil to drip into the rocker and lubricate the ball washer on the rocker pivot. Could possibly put some extra oil on the springs for cooling, not sure about that.
In my opinion a very good thing to have if running OEM style stamped steel rockers. Specially if running higher ratio rockers or higher lift cam. Many people have no problems without them, but can't hurt to have them if they will fit. |

Thank you dataway. The next time I have my valve covers off I will break out my rocker arm covers and see if they fit. If they don't I may look into figuring out how to make them fit (putting spacers/washers in to raise them up enough to clear the rocker arm.
