I have a four car garage. Actually, it's two seperate two car garages. My wife and kid have one garage and I get the other one for my stuff. Unfortuately I have another kid who just started driving and I'll have to give up a park spot when they get their own car. The bare chassis shot is an old picture of when I first moved in. I hadn't unloaded all my junk yet so it looks clean. The el camino in the pictures belongs to my wife's dad and it's back together now so the garage isn't as messy.

Here's mine. It's 24x40, with a full attic storage space (when the picture was taken, my Pontiac was parked in that blind stall to the left so you can't see it.)

what's the minimum width of my garage I'd need to install a lift into my garage?

I've seen some where people seem to be pretty close to the sides.

I currently have a 20x20 2 car garage and not sure what or how to add. I'm considering building another bay, either along side it or in my back yard.

So what's the minimum sized bay for a lift?

Also, does anyone put the in-floor lift any more? This would eliminate the posts.

Adam. No offence but a 20'X20' garage is a two car parking garage (barely)and a one car working garage. The lift would (IMO) have to be placed in the center to allow enough room to even set the lift arms to lift car...If you check out my pics (post #90)you will notice the room required.
My garage is 26'X48'....that's 15.5'(wide)X24.5' per bay..inside deminsion.
I would consider building another bay at least 16' wide to accomadate a lift, preferably with 12' ceiling & at least 24' long My ceiling is only like 10'/2" and it's a good thing I'm a short dude...5'6"....The "inground" lifts are very cumbersome to say the least. Haven't seen one installed in years..not even sure they make them anymore..I have worked in tight garages and they are a PITA not mention a accident waiting to happen..Good luck on shop..
Happy New Year to...
Troy

Yea, my tight garage stinks. I park in the middle, usually on a diagnal, when I need to work on the entire car. Or, I back in and put the trunk agains the wall to work on the engine. etc. This is all fine for light work, but not for anything that takes more than a day or two.

Hmm. So 16x24. ok. Thanks.

Don't be to quick to condemn your garage..I'm sure there are guys who don't have a garage would love it...and yes..I think a 16X24 bay area would be good. Room the have a tool box/work bench up front and room to work..or for a lift.
CYA next year !!!

I know. With heat (60,000 BTU for quick warm ups!), insulation (including door), a 17.5' x 8' door, 9.5' ceilings, air compressor plumbed through attic, 1200 watts of lights, and a nice and neat paint job of walls, ceiling and floor, I'm ahead of many of my peers. But the garage is always bigger on the other side ;-)
