Steering wheel paint
I'm filling the cracks in my steering wheel with JB weld and I'm going to need some matching paint to finish it off ... is there such a thing? The interior is 68 Ivy Gold
And ... while I'm at it, I noticed Ames no longer carries Ivy Gold vinyl dye ... is there another source? Thanks fellow 68-69 folks. |

I repaired the cracks in the steering wheel on my '66 Ford F100 with PC7 epoxy and then had it repainted by the body shop with the same base coat/clear coat paint they used for the body, since on those trucks that was the color used for the interior parts as well. That doesn't directly answer your question, but I wanted to point out that the automotive paint will hold up well on a steering wheel.
Auto Color Library has the old PPG paint chip charts for 1968-1969 cars, and on the second page they have the paint codes for interior parts. A good auto paint supply store should hopefully be able to match up the codes to modern paints. https://www.autocolorlibrary.com/pag...HorizontalTab2 https://www.autocolorlibrary.com/pag...HorizontalTab2 |

I'm pretty sure that Vinyl Pro can mix any color (OEM/custom) SEM vinyl dye/paint for you.

If those suggestions don't work, TCP Global mixed my interior color based on the factory code.

You might try these folks, I used them for some Yorktown Blue. They will do single stage upon request.

I think the April Gold is the named used by other GM divisions for Ivy Gold.
Thank you for the suggestions I'm sure one those can provide what I need. Is the dye like a paint? Would it work on the plastic of a steering wheel? Perhaps with some kind of primer intended for that purpose? I've never once used any vinyl dye/paint before. |

Everyone calls the SEM flexible paint dye but as I understand it, it's actually paint. I used the SEM Colorcoat from TCP Global and Duplicolor brand adhesion promoter sold off the shelf at AutoZone. It's a clear primer in a rattle can.
I painted my rear seats, kick panels, console, arm rests and a-pillar covers and no flaking whatsoever in the 8 or 9 years since and the SEM product matches my Legendary panels and bucket seat covers perfectly. Cleanliness is the key l believe. Sent from my moto g stylus (2021) using Tapatalk

I just ordered SEM stuff, the adhesion promoter and the dye/paint to experiment with.

Got the SEM Med/April Gold ... matches the dash paint almost perfectly, close on the plastic parts ... but you wouldn't want it side by side with a good condition original part.
As I was working on the steering wheel and buffing down the plastic to the original plastic I kept thinking the color reminded me of something .... "Avacado" paint that was used on kitchen appliances way back when. Did some research and it appears the color came out in 1966. From what I can tell from a computer screen so far, Light Avacado is almost a perfect match for the plastic of the steering wheel. Might see if I can pick some up and try it out. The SEM is a great match for the column cover, and I tried it on some very faded, powdered vinyl kick panels that a fingernail could dig a groove in ... was amazed how well the adhesion promotor and paint made the surface very stable and hard to scratch, like it turned that powder back into plastic. So in a pinch don't throw away those panels that look totally useless, if they don't see a lot of abuse the SEM might save them. |

That outfit seems to cover about all the bases, I can think of some other uses besides the Pontiac for their color matching.
