Default Sheet metal identification

Is it possible to determine if the metal on a gto is still original and not replaced by repops ,looking to see if there is some number on the metal panels or welds.

There is a code on original metal with a letter followed by some numbers. At least on a 64 GTO...

Quarter numbers are in the trunk lip area. Doors are on the inside under the door panels. Fenders as I recall are on the inside overlap above the inner fenders. As I recall the number is a style number. There’s also a date code.

From what I understand the date code is the Julian week
I think the Fisher Body Stamping plant location is part of it too.
For my Fremont (Z) first week of May build I have dates ranging from 15 to 18 on most of the components

Style number represents the base model style such as 2327 Z 16 for my 68 GTO doors and vent window 2327 Z 15

The Cowl, Week 17 Fremont, First Shift or Line A?

There also different date formats such as this one from I think, my front fender
4 B 8 - Second week of April 68

Door Jamb Week 15

I also noticed the firewall number had a Chevrolet Body Style Z 18 13227

Numbers face the interior, second photo is a mirror image

Ed, I have never seen door stamps that precise before! My 68 is also a Fremont build, 03A, so first week of March. I'll attach pictures of my fender codes.

One is 2A16 and the other 2C19M. I had always assumed the 2 in front of the other codes was to indicate Pontiac, like 1 is Chevy, etc. So maybe it is the month like you surmise. So Feb 16th and Feb 19th for my fenders. My guess on the A/B/C is the shift at the plant??? No idea on M. Side note, my cowl is also stamped with 133 (I believe, hard to read), so it was a Chevy part as well!

I'll try to get my door codes soon, they're not accessible right now. I know they are not that crisp like yours though.

I found the door stamp on my drivers door. It has a nice precise stamp as well. A little different format than yours though. My firewall is also 13227, which was the model code for a base Chevelle 2 door.

I think your fender date format theory is closer to reality than mine. That would be Apr 8, shift B for my fender. (4B 8 M, Still second week of April though.) Its possible that the letter may indicate production line too? Hopefully somebody in the know will step in and explain.

Can't access the other fender to check the date on it just now, in storage.
