Default Any Volkswagen mechanics ?

My grandson is working on a 1981 VW van that was sitting in a garage for 12 years. So far he has removed the fuel tank and cleaned it, replaced filter, replaced fuel pump, cap and rotor, battery. The engine fires but won’t keep running. It reminds me of the Mopars of the past with the resistor on the firewall going bad. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Does it keep running if you spray starter fluid or brake cleaner into the intake ? Triage (fuel, air, or spark) is good.

No knowledge of VWs, but recently my '64 GTO suddenly wouldn't fire. A bit of sputtering on cranking the first time it stalled out. Two days later it ran about 10 secs, then died and wouldn't fire or even sputter at that point.

I thought fuel and was all set to open up the fuel line to see if my pump was pumping thru the filter.

But forum member buds56 suggested distributor condensor. Swapped a new one in and voila, it fired right up and seems to be cured.

You mentioned cap and rotor but not points and condenser. Maybe it's an electronic distributor but thought I'd throw this idea out there just in case.

Otherwise, I'd follow what padgett suggests. It's a fuel injected engine right?

Good suggestion on the fuel. I had the same situation with my Firebird with the condenser. Finally fixed it a couple weeks ago.

Interesting video about a possible no start cause on what may be the same engine.

This thread might be a whole lot more comprehensive.
