How can I tell the 69 GP I'm looking at is an SJ other than emblems and buildsheet? Is it in the v.i.n. #? Also will the v.i.n. # and/or cowl tag tell me if it's a 428 h.o.?

Louis,

There were a number of items which were part of the SJ package. These items were not exclusive to the SJ, but were hard to find as options on a "j".
1) Factory level control package. It includes the funny little cylindrical vacuum driven air pump in the passenger side front of the engine compartment, special air shocks (most likely long gone), and a valve attached above the rear end.
2) 428 Engine (370 hp) was standard
3) Interior convenience lighting package
4) Ralley gauge cluster and clock.

If the car does not have (at least) all of these things (or signs that they were present), the car was not an SJ.

As far as whether it is a 428 HO car, does it have the long header style HO manifolds, and an oil filter adapter which extends and rotates the oil filter out of the way of the HO manifolds? It would also have the following engine codes: either WL or XG. As best as I can tell, the '69s did not include any engine identification as part of the VIN.

Maybe someone else has conclusive evidence that these early GM cars had engine info as part of the VIN.

Hope this helps

K.
