Default Master cylinder rebuilder recommendations

After sending my Master and proportioning valve to Apple Hydraulics. I just got them back with the verdict that they can't do the needed work....

Well, before I give up and go the repop route. Does anyone else have a recommendation?

Anyone have luck on tough pieces before?

What is the problem with the MC. Is the bore pitted? If not, they are pretty easy to rebuild yourself.

Here is what they said... Master is seized/frozen and only way to get guts out is to drill a hole on the other end, push everything out, then plug the hole, then get all new internal parts, even these that are not in rebuild kit .... bottom line, cost to do master is $420 ($175 above standard cost).

Yeah, they did a crappy job for me, but thought I would try to steer you off course to a fly by night shop....

Actually, they did a great job for me on my master and prop valve.

I have used Whitepost on several master cylinders and brake cylinders. Very satisfied and they guarantee their work. If you have a "survivor" part with a finish you don't want altered make sure you tell them so they don't paint it. Usually a one day turnaround. I have sent several to them by FedEx ground on a Monday and had the unit back in my hands by Thursday. Usually runs around $175 to do a master cylinder.

I did mange to get on severely stuck one apart that was in a junkyard for 30 years. It was a not fun. Hard to believe this one could be that bad unless it also was sitting in a yard for decades.

Mike, I've gotten a number of them apart that were pretty seized. Just takes a little effort. Squirt a liberal amount of penetrating oil in each orifice and let sit for awhile. The first piston is easy to get out as you can drill a hole in it and thread it, then use a bolt to pull it out, after you remove the retaining ring. You can use a socket extension and a socket that matches the piston head to "bounce" the rear piston free. (note: try this first with the accessible piston as this helps to loosen it. Sometimes the pistons will stick in farther, but they have springs behind them, so there's tension there. A long needle nose pliers helps to grab hold of the second piston's nub. It's just a matter of trial and error. I haven't had one beat me yet.
I've had success with Apple. M.C.s are easy to rebuild so I just had them put the brass sleeve in. That's $115.

Craig, did Bill sleeve them himself, have someone else do it then finish the rebuild, or just put new seals in and refinish?

Bill to the best of my knowledge dosent own a mill or any other method of boring the body. So if he did he sent it out to be done.

Thanks for the great advice! I'll try whitepost and leave my options away from Bill.

Who, I'm sure is familiar with the car. Funny, I actually saw the correct rebuilt master on the shelf with the correct starter too. Not sure how they disappeared when I needed them along with a lot of other key pieces...

Whitepost will only do a full rebuild, so you don'the get the option to save some coin and do the easy part yourself.
