Default Received PHS Today For 1969 RAIV Engine

And I have a couple of questions. A posi-rearend is not listed. Was it part of the TA package? What about a tachometer? Where would the clock be mounted? Thanks.

Posi rearend was part of the ta package and on a firebird 400 it was part of the package when the raIV was ordered . If you got the tach you didn't get the clock ,the gauges went there . Also that car came with the decor package which was some chrome trim .

Wow - what a great car that one was. Does the guy you got the engine from know what happened to it?

The PHS shows code 484 RALLY GA&CL which appears to be the rally gauges with the clock. Does this mean this car did not have a tach? Thanks-Kyle.

Keith, from what I have been able to gather so far, it is most likely that this car did not survive. However anything is possible so I hold out hope that it will surface one day.

That would be awesome to find the car after you have the engine. What are your plans for the IV?
Do you mind listing the dealer listed on the PHS? My grandfather was a Pontiac dealer and my Dad worked for a Pontiac dealer in that era, always thought it would be cool to see a PHS with a car from one of those dealerships. Still haven't seen one from my Grandfather's place, but did see a '73 SD T/A from where my Dad once worked (he quit there in '71 though). Thanks

That's correct, no tach. As I recall, about 1/3 of TAs had idiot lights, about 1/3 had code 484 rally gauges w/clock, and about 1/3 had code 444 IP tach and gauges ("IP" is instrument panel; it's been referred to as "tach-n-stack" or "stacked gagues"). A few cars with idiot lights may have had the clock-only option. I don't believe any cars came from factory with hood-mounted tach, although there's a few cars around with them. Looks like hell on that hood.

Thanks Kyle,

Makes me wonder..what transmission was behind it when you pulled it out? Was it the TA trans or the wagon trans?

Good question as the intake still has an automatic tranny vacuum line bracket on it. RAIV auto would really be quite rare indeed.

Which bracket are you referring to? The engine was backed by the original 1963 Slim-Jim automatic transmission. In this photo you can see the flexplate/flywheel. Also check out that vintage oil filter!

That is a time capsule for sure. I would be interested to see the ship date on the PHS VS. the date code on the block. Thanks for posting nice large photos this time!

I have a question maybe some of you Ram Air IV guys can answer.

This looks like a very original engine, but shouldn't there be a stud on the head bolt at the left front side? (This is the long head bolt by the exhaust port of cylinder #1.)

And, the short head bolt between cylinders #2 and #4 has a stud, but I don't think it should?

Anyone know the answer?

Must be different since the battery is on the right side of the engine compartment on '69 Firebirds.

Yes , battery is on passenger side and those head bolts and ex. bolts have never had a wrench on them .
