Default What year Formula hood

I've had this hood sitting in my basement for a long time. It has factory ram air, but I can't remember if it is a 70 or a 71. I think the 73+ hoods had two square holes per side, and 70-72 had one square hole per side. This has none.

What year is it?

Mike

I believe it's newer than 1970.

How do you tell the difference?

I have four with factory ram air, and they all look alike to me. How do you tell the difference?

I have a guy that is specifically wanting a 70 Formula ram air hood, and I'm not sure what the difference is.

Did they change in 73 like the original T/A hoods or are 71-75 the same?

The '70 didn't have the metal support bars down the sides. There may have been a casting date under the hood latch assembly riveted in, but I doubt it.

I bought my Lucy Blue 70 Formula from the original owner in 1982 with 60K miles. It was a late car, built in June. We lived in the same town and had the same insurance agent (State Farm) and with the owner's permission he gave me the claim history on the car. The only accident was a minor bump in the rear end that broke the fiberglass panel.

It had the pieces of metal on the bottom. I was also told it had the late style quarter panels (something about the vent shape).

I think the metal pieces were probably a running change in the 70 model year.

Are there any variations in the fiberglass?

I almost bought a 70 Formula few years ago that was a late build, June or July as I recall. It had the original hood, and it had the metal strips on it.

I circled the differences between a '70 and the later (that I know of), passenger side. A '70 may have had the later style, I can't guarantee.

1970

1971-5 (NOS too)

The straps showed up in the later production 70's - we never did figure out when the cutoff was.

If he wants a 70 only Mike you'll need to find out if it's an early or late car - early will need to be the one without the straps and will be BIG $$$$ - Your hood will work for later production.

I have one I'm saving for just the right car!

I picked up the hood many years ago at a small show a Charlotte (the old Metrolina Fairgrounds). I believe the seller told me it was off of a 70 Formula. I remember he had a 70 12-bolt 3.31 that I was close to buying that was supposed to be out of the same car. The housings was pretty badly pitted, the car came out of WV and the salt did a number on the metal in the hood and the rear end.

I have five 70 Formulas and all are missing the metal braces. The 71-75 hoods are the same BTW... just remove the metal braces and fill the holes... wa-la.. 70 hood.

Has anyone here attempted to replace the metal bracing on the 71 up Formula hoods with thicker material? We all know that these hoods tend to bow, and the metal is usually kinked like the picture above. I have always wonder if a person doubled up on the thickness if it would help straighten out the hood.

I believe the kink is there from the factory... it is the crush point so the hood folds up during collisions.

I disagree, unless you're fixing the other area I've circled in my pics. I thought the '70 has a ledge there as opposed to the slope on the '71-up.

There are some other differences Captain Obvious may have missed.

70 Hood and later NOS - see how many you can pick out.

I have six 70 Formula hoods, and there are slight differences between them. I also have a few 71-75 hoods, and they have some slight differences. At least one of the 71-75 hoods is identical to the one of 70 hoods (minus the brace). My position is... There is no such thing as a 70 only hood mold. There were apparently a few different molds from the beginning. You show me a true 70 hood, and I will show you another true 70 hood that is different.
