Default How to keep mice out of cars?

A friend has a 66 Starchief that is usually parked in a garage. Mice seem to leave droppings all over the carpet and trunk.

What is an effective plan of attack to keep them away?

Some people have said to put Bounce dryer sheets in the car. Other people have said to put in a bar of Irish Spring soap. I tried the Irish Spring in my 2+2 parts car and now it has teeth marks on it. So give Bounce a try.

We have alot of mice problems in our electrical panels at work. We use a health foodstore product called essence of peppermint. Its a liquid peppermint juice keeps them at bay for quite awhile and makes everything smell like a candy store.

I have a 68 GTO rag top .What I did was set 4 traps on the floor inside the car , and 4 outside in the garage on the floor by the car, checking and reloading for a few days. After the traps clean up the area and they stop going off I place those devices that emit a high frequency sound that the mice dont like. I place 2 inside the car a plug one in the garage. I also place warafin poison in the certain places in the garage. This seems to have worked for me, my garage and car have been mice free since. How do I know for sure you ask ? Well I keep all the traps loaded and they have not been hit or the Bait (cheese) been stolen.

Bounce dryer sheets, Irish Spring Soap Bars, mothballs all work great although the mothballs tend to keep humans out too.

hopefully Sandmanjoe will chime in with his expertise in this subject area..........

I think mothballs work best if you don't want to use traps

I have been doing the high frequency sound device for years and I am clear of mice, plus I have poison at all 4 corners of my garage just in case they do get in.

I had mice in the car about 5 years ago but I think that was because the car had to sit outside for a few days and I think they got in the car then. Took a while to catch them, they were very smart mice. I set traps up in the car and they would eat the food without snapping the trap. So I got smart and I duct taped 4 traps together in a "cross" shape, figured this way they have to rest while they are eating. Caught 3 and have never had any since I do not leave the car out anymore.

If you can get one of those high pitch pest devices, I would get one. Great item to have.

Mark

They don't like moth balls but then again owners might not either....I'd rather have smell of those than torn up interior.

Does he leave it on jack stands. If so put jack stands in metal tubs and fill bottom with a little oil.

slide a pan 1/2 full of antifreeze under the car with a board laying against it so they can run up into the pan on a ramp.

Bounce seems to work on Pennsylvania mice . I put them in between our pool furniture/cushions when I stored them last fall. I just pulled them out today - there were definitely mice in the shed over the winter but no cushions were chewed. Must be the Bounce. Keeps my "project car" under the tarp smelling good too.

You can get those sticky mouse traps... I put a couple under the car and one or two in the car. They smell like peanut butter & I've caught as many as three on one strip over a week period...

remove any food sources in the garage... pet food, seeds, garbage...

Field or city mice ? My 65 GP was in a barn untouched for 4 months with dryer sheets (unknown brand) and they were chewed, along with empty aluminum cans!

The car is not on jackstands.

Mike Nixon's idea of antifreeze and a ramp might be worth a try.

If you decide to leave anti-freeze out, be sure to keep any dogs away, they will drink it if you let them.

Dogs and cats like the sweet smell of ethylene glycol.

Not any housepets around the car.

We had this discussion about a month ago.
I have 2 cars that rodents(we think its squirrels) chewed thru wiring on top of engine.
Someone suggested juicy fruit gum.
They eat it and cant digest it so it clogs them up.
Just be sure and check the car every few days.
I cant imagine what a dead mouse that full of p@@p smells like.
