Default First job interview in 25 years

I envy no one that has to do this, I had my first one in 25 years, never thought I was old until I sat in a room with a bunch of 20 to 30 year old kids I could be the parent of.

I'm used to a certain income level and it's dropped over the last few years this gets me closer to where I was and I'm planning to move south in a couple years, thinking Texas and I could get the chance, at 48 time to make changes are slipping away so I want to make a change before 50

I've gotten rid of a lot of my luxuries in my downsizing, new house and farm will go in two more years when I decide to move, if I get this job I will be starting over with a decent salary and a better knowledge of what I did wrong in the past.

Go get 'em. There's a lot of money out in the world. It just takes going and getting. It's not all over at 50, but I understand the concern. The world seems geared to the young, because that's where the future and hope lies (for that future).

But despite being only slightly opinionated and mostly timid about vocalizing my opinions, I've garnered some support in my field.

Some people would rather have a 25 year old living at home than someone that's worked everyday and doesn't complain just because their over 35. When I hired help I looked for the most experienced no matter the age, I had a 60 year old guy worked for me about 15 years ago until it got to be to much for him. Had a 18 year old kid that his mom showed up at the job site and told me what he was allowed to do, I sent him home with her.

I made a huge career switch, and at 59 I am making more money than I ever made before.

Age is just a number, think positive and make it happen!

Age is just a number.
I was forced to retire in 2011 after 22 years at this plant because it closed after it was sold to out side the United States people.
The plant had an over 100yr history.
Come to find out the new owners just wanted the pantent rights and machines.
Any way at 55yrs old,I have found it hard to find full time good employment.
I have had 2 jobs with a temp agency.
I am believing that my age and the $$$ I use to make scares potential employeers.
I have tried for $ 10hr. jobs and can't get them.
I think that the HR people think that if they hire me I will still be looking for a higher paying job while working for them.
But what ever....I am not selling my 69 GTO.

Get rid of the old guy that knows better and hire someone young they can brainwash and pay less money. Not 100% right but you sure see it nowdays.

Good luck; although opinions vary it seems age discrimination can start at 50

You have my sympathy; over 10 years ago when I was a machinist (changed careers) they closed our plant. I was lucky, I was almost finished with college and in my 20s, but I know many guys who had to work just a few more years. The head of maintenance was making $28/hr I believe and could only find a job for $8/hr at NAPA. He told me if he didn't "know somebody" he wouldn't have even got that. Sad, this guy could fix anything and all he could find was an auto parts delivery job. I don't even know if it was full time. The plants production going to Mexico destroyed what many guys retirement plans that had worked their whole lives at the company to get to -

Sorry to hear your situation, us older guys seem to be left in the rear sometimes, I think staying with a job as long as we have may be a bad thing, when the time comes that we need the change we put all our eggs into the one basket and age has caught up to us. The last few years with housing as it is I would close up shop and start up a new business but things pick up and I hang in there until it hits me again and the cycle starts over.
This time I'm serious about it.

I've been fortunate to have had work in a stable field with very fair pay for the work put in. But I stuck with a lousy office environment for way too many years which caused a lot of frustration for me watching unqualified and unscrupulous people gouge clients and our employer. I'm better off now. Hope you will be too.

I got a chance to retire early at 45 but now after 4 years I am looking to go back to work as I am bored senseless. I worked In the auto parts business for 30 years and would love to do it again but it's tough out there
