Thanks for sharing, Skip. Mid-low 13's with a 348 in a big '64 Impala is very impressive. Love the panel paint/lace paint job on the mopar in the one shot.
I don't think anybody here can get enough of old photos and history like this. Priceless stuff. Thanks again!!

it was a 409 70K mile cast piston 340 HP low perf short block. we used the "348' term for street racing since most folks in the early 70s had forgotten about W motors.

what a blast. us young guys always left our written in shoe polish times on the windshield for a few days after racing as a badge of honor.

I ran a local 1/8 mile strip back in the mid-1970s. I was running a 1967 Firebird 400 4-spd. It had been upgraded to a 1971 455HO with M22 and a 12-bolt rear. How I managed to get the 455HO into the Firebird is a whole separate saga, and is how I discovered the difference between D-port and round port heads.

There was a home made Christmas tree, one for both racers. Two people determined who won, and timing was with a stop watch. I'm not even sure the track was a full 1/8 mile. It wasn't long enough for anything much faster than a car capable of running low 12's in the quarter. If you wanted to run a full 1/4 mile, Shuffletown Dragstrip was 30 miles away in Charlotte. This strip was mostly locals doing grudge racing and test and tune. But it was fun.
