Default Linseed Oil on Patina

Anyone ever tried it? I’ve heard of it being the poor man’s clear coat, just curious if anyone has done it with success.

Results may vary, step one, make sure you are using "boiled" linseed oil ["raw" linseed oil does not really dry] and usually it is cut 30-50% with mineral spirits or some prefer turpentine. Spray and wipe or wipe on and then off with a lint free rag, it will take more time than many are willing to allow for it to dry to the touch, several days depending on temps and humidity. It will tend to darken as it drys changing the look of what you are covering. Extended exposure to sun [UV] will degrade the finish in time. Do some testing before you take on your project, not everyone is happy with the results. This finish is often used by folks with one lunger flywheel engines that wish to protect and preserve what is left of original paint.

The guy that worked on my 1972 Honda CT90 used it and it looked great afterwards. He used it on the frame, fenders, etc.

Interesting, maybe I'll sample it on a spot and see. I had planned to eventually take my car into a body shop and have them clear coat it or whatever they'd recommend. A friend of mine just mentioned the linseed oil, and I thought maybe I'd do it in the mean time until I feel like spending the money on body shop work. Surely the linseed oil could be washed off if needed and wouldn't damage the paint?

I use Linseed oil on my fence posts, around the farm, garden boxes, etc...

I use Castor oil for polishing vintage furniture, repelling ticks around the yard, and lubricating garden tools that touches food.

I use Tung oil for kitchen counters, and cutting boards because its 100% safe for food once dried.

But honestly I never thought of spraying any of those oils on a car or motorcycle to preserve the patina... but it seems a decent idea...

For rat rods and machines we always used a satin clear.

One of my favorite oldschool military product is Cosmoline or lanolin based light to heavy waxes .

I would soak everything in Cosmoline...Well, on everything that I dont need to clean the cosmoline off later on...

VGG has done a few video's on this subject. Here is one I found. There was another one I watched recently I couldn't find where he sprayed PB blaster in the linseed oil. It came out surprisingly good.
