Default KRE head milling.

Ordered a set f Kaufman D-ports in the 74 cc flavor. They cc-ed at 79 cc's. I was wondering what is the maximum amount one can mill off ? Or how much have you milled?

Going on a small bore build.

Seriously thanks ,I was going to call tomorrow but thought I might learn something from the insightful veteran engine gurus here.

You could easily mill .060" off the deck of those heads without thinking twice, but the caveat is that at a mill of .035" you really will need to start milling the Intake flange on the head the same amount to keep things bolting up right and depending on how much you knock off you might not be able to use a gasket on the valley pan cover , and or you may need to trim the bottom of the Intake Manifold or the top lip of the valley pan so that the Manifold and the pan do not interfere with each other.

Also any milling effects your VTP clearance

Figure on every .006" you flat mill off the heads reducing the chamber volume by 1 CC.

Thanks for the information. I am aware of the issues with the intake and valley pan. If memory serves me we milled .078 off our SD heads back in the early 90's. They started out as 118cc chambers.

Starting from scratch so as of now we have a good block and some new heads. Without pistons VTP is clearance is unlimited. LOL.

Are the faces of your valves in the KRE heads dished?

First off. Yes, the valve heads are dished.

And second Kauffman got back to me today and said there would be no problem with heads after milling .100 off.

Bolting the rest of the pieces is on where the difficulties will lie.

I may have to look into an aftermarket valley cover.

Thanks everyone for the help.
