Finishing a fancy Walnut stock.
I have a 2 piece figured Walnut stock I just finished fitting to a lever action rifle. I used 120 to 600 to sand it, raised the grain, sanded it and wiped it with Mineral Spirits.
I wonder what the next step is on the way to finishing? I don't think I want a shiny Poly or varnish. What do you recommend? |

Just use Minwax paste wax , or linseed oil / boiled linseed oil will darken it . All will not have a shine , but a low soft luster . And not be slippery either .

I'd try boiled linseed oil. Warm it up a little and rub it in - let it sit then wipe off any excess. Wait a couple days then reapply. After it dries thoroughly you can wax it for a little more sheen.
I haven't done any woodworking in years but this was my favorite topping when I did. Figured hardwoods like walnut and cherry really look good with this finish. Mark O.

Thanks all. I like the BLO or LO recommendations. I've used it on Milsurps. I blended Turpentine and BLO last time. That gives good water resisting qualities.

Be really careful with the rags you use for applying linseed oil. I left some balled up rags soaked in linseed oil on my workbench once and they will spontaneously combust!
They started smoking after several hours on my bench. Thankfully, I saw them smoking and got them out of the shop. Steve |

Thanks, all. It's a pretty good looking stick. I leave the rags hung over a metal railing outside.

Thanks, Randy. I bought the roughed in blank on ebay so I was way ahead on time. I probably had a few hours on the butt and maybe 2 on the forearm before oiling. The hardest part was fitting the butt into the receiver and shaving it down so it blended in size well.
I found that video after looking for it from the Heineken commercial. No dancing though. |
