R'uh r'oh - my wife has a hankerin' for a vintage camp trailer, so I may be in touch!

(lol)

Welcome -

There was a vintage trailer display here at the "Eyes on Design" Concours event a few weeks back, held at the Edsel Ford Estate. If I can find the link I'll post it here for your entertainment.

The link was struggling to open, so I'll just post some trailer pics here. This group was known as "the Tin Can Tourists":

Here's the whole thread if you'd like to see the other displays (caution: lots of photos!):

Sorry for the hijack -

There are a bunch of those old trailers in AZ. The small Airstreams are worth more than the big ones. You have to watch out how some of the trailers are made. The poor designed trailers can get roof leaks and it ends up rotting the wood out of them.

I had a Scotty like in the pictures. You could tow it as fast as you wanted to go. They don't have much ground clearence and they scrape going over speed bumps and driving into parking lots. They are real low on the quality of construction.

Wow, cool stuff man. The last 2 Pontiacs I've bought both had trailer hitches on them. I think that's saying something. My wife and I have property in Mitchell County NC (mountains) but don't have a house up there yet. I may buy a "canned ham" to stay in while we build something. Has to be vintage for sure...

I looked for one of those small Airstreams for a long time. Fixer uppers use to go for 10K on Ebay. Another popular small trailer is a Shasta if you can find one. I still see a lot of the Spartens around. People want the small trailers because they are easy to park.

They wanted over 7K for this one and it was ruff. It was gone a few weeks after the picture was taken.

This is on my 63. Notice it was made in San Fernando, the same place as the Bowlus.

Good info, Ken.

As I mentioned, my wife has been looking - so this gives me a bit more ammunition....

You can find them for a few hundred dollars. The fixed up Shastas were going for about 4K on Ebay. They used birch wood interiors on the good trailers before they cheapened them up. You can buy missing stuff for them just like finding parts for a old car. Always look at the roof and in the corners of the interior. If they leaked you will be able to see it. Some of the roofs have a seam in the metal and when the caulking dries out they will leak. Most of the trailers you have in the pictures don't have that problem because the way they were made, that is why they survived. The Scotty has the seam in the middle of the roof. The Airstreams can have problems with the floors. The body has to seperated from the frame to fix the floor.

This is the interior of mine. It was missing the globe for the gas light. They still sell new globes.

There are some neat videos of vintage trailers on youtube. They have RV world 1937 and another one from 1935 with something that looks like Flash Gordon would have.
