My 400 has been a pretty good combo and took years of abuse. My best all motor pass was 12.50. This setup consistently ran anywhere from 12.6 to 12.9 depending on heat, humidity, and motor temp. The cars best 60’ time is 1.64 but I’ve been unable to duplicate that and it usually runs anywhere from mid 1.7’s to 1.9 range. I need to work on this area. This motor liked to rev to 6000 rpm. The car is a ’69 Firebird 400 and race weight is 3800 pounds.

Engine Modifications:
'69 400 2 bolt block bored .030
Deck height set to zero
#62 Iron heads, minor bowl blend – milled about .015 - no flow numbers.
Stock 10/10 crank
Eagle H-beam rods with ARP fasteners
Forged TRW pistons
Crower 60211 cam/lifter set
Crower 1.6:1 roller rockers
Mallory Hyfire IV
Mallory Mechanical magnetic distributor
Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake, top 1” milled out of plenum divider
825 CFM Mighty Demon

Transmission:
’69 Muncie has been upgraded with Super Case, Iron Mid plate, M22 wide ratio gears
McLeod SFI Aluminum Flywheel
11” clutch

Rearend:
Dana 60 with 4.10 gears and 35 spline Strange axles and Aerospace disc brakes

Suspension
Multi-leaf rear springs
QA-1 Drag Race coil over shocks/springs up front
CE adjustable drag shocks in back
1 1/8” sway bar up front
Cal-trac’s

A new configuration is in progress and the changes are:

Motor bored .030 – dingle berry hone to remove glaze (bores are good)
#62 Iron heads – owner ported using Jim Hand method and Pete McArthy video.
275 / 188 cfm @ 500 lift on intake / exhaust, respectively
New Manley valves
Probe SRS Pistons with Mahle rings
* Converting to Solid flat tappet cam – not selected yet

I’ll post final configuration changes and results once I get them.

MOTOR- '69 400 YA, .060 over, stock crank, SpeedPro L2262F pistons, CAT H-beam rods, HS 1.65 rockers, Crane cam kit # 283802, Edelbrock 72cc heads, Performer RPM Intake, Q-jet(waiting on new one from Cliff), 2" MadDog Headers, RobbMc starter. Will be installing Summit 3" cutouts with DMH electric cutouts in a couple weeks.

DRIVETRAIN- 200-4R, Transgo HD shift kit, 12 bolt, 4.10 Posi built by Pyle Bros. Hurst V-matic II shifter.

Took car to San Antonio Raceway last year, ran 17's, hence the new 400 was called for. Broke cam in this afternoon, ran around for about hour today.........think I can kiss 17's goodbye ;-).

My car is a driver first, take to track couple times a year. Last November, drove my car from Corpus Christi, to SAR for racing, 300 mile roundtrip, then following weekend, drove it to Houston 400 mile roundtrip, and was entrant in Autorama, got Honorable Mention, was pretty cool.

Look forward to going back to SAR and posting some "lower times" Kelly

Here's the engine that was previously in my gto

Block: '77 400 bored .30 over 2 bolt mains with ARP studs
TRW forged pistons
Speed-pro moly rings
Stock rods, ARP bolts
Stock crank, .020/.020 under
fully balanced assembly
high volume oil pump
homemade crank scraper
Heads: '67 670's bone stock
stock rockers
crane dual valve springs
Cam/lifters: Summit 2802 224/234 @.050 .465/.488 lift 114 LSA
dynomax headers (didn't fit the gto very well)
3" full exhaust
Summit fully welded mufflers
HEI with accel supercoil, taylor wires
MSD 6al
milodon water pump
MT covers
Performer RPM intake
Holley 750 vac. secondaries

With the timing dialed in, it ran good on super unleaded. Tough, rowdy sounding idle, but very streetable. Strong idle with plenty of vacuum, lots of low-end torque and it really started to scream above 2500.

I never ran this engine at the dragstrip... but I can say it was a very fun street engine in my 4 speed 67 GTO with 4.10 rear gears. My guess is it would be capable of somewhere in the 14's or maybe 13's in the quarter.

Talking My new 455 Build

Recently (should read: "Finally!") got the 455 up and running in my '65 GTO post car. Only has about 250 miles on it right now - due to change the oil tomorrow before putting any more miles on it. So far I'm extremely pleased with the Rhoads lifters, I'm running cast alum. valve covers and the noise is not excessive to me at all (like someone else said: sounds like a sewing machine). Waiting for Dave's small-body to arrive and my completion of the '66 TriPower before I can say "it's done" (powertrain).

1975 455 (heavy webbed) .060 to 467 cu. in.:

Arrow 350 HO 'clone'

Here's a mild 350 combo I put together for a '69 Firebird that my brother owns, a heavily optioned car (A/C, power discs/steering/windows/drivers seat, deluxe interior) that weighs over 3700# without the driver.

1968 350 (354) bored +.030 so it now dispaces 360 cubes. The lower-end was rebuilt with cast pistons and stock cast rods by a previous owner and was still fairly fresh, I added the rest of the parts listed.

1969 400/428 #46 heads, cheap valve job/used stock springs, stock press-in bottle-neck studs, not milled for added compression, ports untouched.

Crane blueprint 068 cam (212/225@.050,.407"lift) advanced 4 degrees running stock 1.5 rockers and adjusting nuts torqued to the stock 20# spec, Cloyes Tru-Roller timing chain set.

Stock 1969 iron intake, exhaust crossover still functional, 1972 400 750 Q-jet rebuilt with no mods, stock 1974 B-body aircleaner 'donated' by a 455 engine.

Stock points distributor.

Stock log exhaust manifolds, cheap 2-1/4" dual exhaust
TH400 trans with shift kit added, TCI Saturday Night Special converter, approx 2500 stall.

1980 T/A 10-bolt 8.5 rear with original factory 3.42 posi, 235/60-15 street radials, no traction devices.

This car ran a 15.21 ET at a 2800 ft. altitude track, launching easy so as not to spin the 235/60-15 street radials. Using the standard correction factor for this track the ET at sea-level would be in the 14.80s. With good traction tires and a harder launch low-14s are easily there.

Pretty much all stock or stock-replacement type parts were used for this engine build. The 068 cam was chosen with .407" lift because of the press-in studs. I didn't want to overstress the valve train and I wanted the simplicity of using the stock 20# valve adjustment procedure (actually no adjustment, stock non-adjustable valvetrain).

A no-frills 350 built on the CHEAP and a decent runner.

my combo. 68 .030 400 with stock crank and zero decked
KB dished pistons with Eagle rods, assembly balanced
9.4 comp with E- RPM heads
Comp Cams XR276HR-10 cam (lift 552 and 561 with HS 1.65 rockers 224 and 230 at .050 Ls 110 cam set at 106)
RPM intake with 750 E-carb, MSD 6A box with factory dist and composite gear
Summit 80 GPH mechanical pump, and 11" DF centerforce clutch
Richmond 5 speed with 8.5 and 2:56.1 gears
Factory long branch manifolds with Pypes 2.5 with X-pipe and race pro transverse muffler
Chassis dyno showed 292 HP and 350 TQ at the wheels with out of the box 750. I tried the 800 and it woke it up pretty good so I tried a 950HP and the gain was noticable. I wish that the funds were there to dyno this thing again( this time with someone who is willing to mess with the carb to fine tune it. I took it in and the 800 E-carb was not running right and they just pulled it off and installed the 750. From 2600 to 4600 it showed an A/F of 12.5 steadily going down to 11.1

Exclamation Quality posts only!

Please make a sincere effort to detail your combo if you want to post in this thread.

If I don't see a sincere effort in your post and you don't spend the time to try to put down everything you know about your combo, I will delete your post.

If you don't know anything about your combo, then you really can't make a meaningful contribution to this thread. If you don't want to play by the rules, then you can expect to be tossed out of the game.

Look at all of the previous contributions to see how others have taken the time to put their setup here for all to see, then make your own post accordingly.

This thread is an archive for all PY members to use for future reference, let's keep it useful.

I would like to thank all of the PY members who have posted detailed car and engine combos for their contributions.

E-heads, 72cc (out of the box)

467cid ('70 RAIII 400 block 0.060 over)

11.5:1 compression (approx.)

RPM manifold

Crower # 60243

1.5:1 rockers

Eagle crank (4.25") and H-beam rods

Pistons, SRP

Hooker Super Comp. headers (2" primary, 3.5" collector)

750cfm Q-jet (RAIII 7040273, wouldn't recommend it, a little small and needed some "Cliff" type mods to work right but no real problems as far as that goes)

Stock pan and windage tray (wouldn't recommend that either, upgrade to a deep sump with baffles and for extra warm fuzzy an oil accumulator too)

I don't know what else to say, hope this was what you were looking for.

Here are the specs for the engine I am about to drop into my '65 LeMans:

'68 400 block, .030 overbore and stock stroke
'68 #16 heads, stock valves with new Comp Cams springs, locks, retainers, pushrods
Comp Cams 1.65 ratio roller tip magnum rockers
Approximately 10.75:1 compression
Stock reconditioned rods, stock crank, and forged .030 over pistons
Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 284/296 adv. duration, 240/246 @ .050" lift
Edelbrock Torker II intake
Big cap HEI distributor and Summit 8mm ignition wires
Factory water pump
Holley 4160 750 cfm dual feed carb
Holley 80 gph mechanical fuel pump
Hooker Competition long tubes with 3" Hooker aerochamber mufflers

No performance numbers yet as it's still new and not in the car yet, plus I still have the original open differential so I'm not about to drag until I get a locker.
