Interesting that it is a real Ram Air car and optioned the way I would have. All it needs is the 3.73 gears to be just right. I see they cheaped out and put Firestone F70 or G70-15's on the 15x7 Honeycombs instead of the F60's. Cool Formula regardless! He seller wants only $15k for '71 dated 455HO engine that he'll build...hmmm...no thanks.

What did he do with the original M13. I would NOT consider the M22 a " correction" . 4 speed is usually more desirable, BUT, if your mission is to correct and put in a HO engine, wouldn't the original transmission be at least included ?

Bruce,
According to the PHS, it's an original HO/Ram Air/M22, (3.42) posi car. |

It seems that most 71-72 W66's....with LS5's are heavily optioned...

I have the PHS or GM of Canada documents for 19 of the 321 HO cars built in 1971, and I would agree with your statement. Most are highly optioned. Only one is a strippo, a white/blue standard, HO, M22, Safe-t-track, and heavy duty cooling system (which makes me think it may have been a 3.73 car).

are THE way GM of Canada made money, and lots of it. Option "Upsell" was huge for profits. I am willing to bet that they bargained for a cheaper car to make more money and got stuck with chevy engines too in most Pontiacs.

The owner is a flipper. He has some postings on the Round Port Pontiac Owners Facebook page under the ‘71 455 HO Blue Formula that sold at Mecum. His pricing was based on the Mecum car sales price.

Besides a big wrong, that car has a lot right about it. 4 speed, great color combo, Safe T Track, HO bloodline, No AC (plus to me), and a few other nice options. Custom interior would have been an ace, but black is plus. And was it a hubcap car? Like! Right price is (???)

there is a nice Sundance Orange 455HO Formula automatic going thru Barrett Jackson this Thursday. Looks like it should cross the block at around mid-day by my guess, says numbers matching engine This one looks like it's in better shape than the Blue car from Mecum-Kissimmee. Here is the link: https://www.barrett-jackson.com/Even...FORMULA-252650

Dennis,
Many years ago I started my own PHS database. I download them from wherever I come across them, eBay, dealer websites, PY, etc. I do not recall where I got this particular one, so I do not know if the car is still around. I'm including another low optioned PHS. This car has a few more options, but it was a damn cool car. The handling package got you 15 inch rims, and I don't see honeycomb wheels or rally II's, so I'm guessing it was a steel wheel car with dog dish hubcaps. Cool look on a black car. I don't know where I got this one and don't know if this car is still out there either. Last edited by eaglesan13; 01-25-2022 at 09:13 PM. |

Thanks for posting those PHS's Chris! Wow, that is a Formula ordered for drag racing for sure. I was looking at the Ebay Formula's PHS and it's Handling Package (code 331) has a suggested retail price of $168.51 and maybe that points to 15x7 steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps. My Formula's Handling Pkg (code 331) had a MSRP of $205.37 ($36.86 more) and came with 15x7 Honeycombs (original to car). Both cars are Van Nuys builds. I have a non-Handling Pkg Formula (Norwood) but was ordered with 15x7 Rally II's ($89.52) and F60x15 tires ($74.78) that cost $164.30 MSRP (couldn't get one without the other), so slightly lower than the Ebay Formula's Handling Pkg.
I have never seen a picture of a 'steel wheel'/dog dish Handling pkg on a '71 Formula. It was my understanding that 331 Handling Pkg came with either 15x7 Rally II's or Honeycombs and that early Formulas had the Rally IIs and late had the Honey's. I've seen 14x7 steel wheel/dog dish Formulas. I'm not sure where I obtained that information or whether it is even correct any more. Dennis |

Thanks GH! That looks like a well used reference manual! The 15x7 Rally II vs. the 15x7 Honeycomb wheel deal in the Handling Pkg is a little foggy in my memory banks, but it seems that the Honeycombs weren't available early in the production year, so the Rally II's were temporarily substituted...I may not have that right.

A Firebird with 15" body color wheels and poverty caps? No such thing.
