Default 70 GTO with base engine brings 177K on Bring a Trailer?

Was curious if anyone here or possibly a member owned this car before it went to a dealer about 6 months ago. It looks like a nice example for sure, has some cool options like vacuum controlled exhaust. But basic 400-350HP, convertible. 4-speed is nice, good colors. Selling price was about 2.5 times what similar models have been bringing. Was curious if I was missing 100K worth of value somewhere? If not, looks like our beloved Pontiacs are finally entering rare Mopar kinds of values. Great if you already own one. Car sold yesterday, 177K plus fees.

I can’t speak to the past owner(s) being a forum member, but our own Tom Hand reproduced the VOE mufflers that helped drive the selling price to the stratosphere!

Well that's just stupid.

Congratulations to the seller!

Here's the other discussion about this car in the GTO section: https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...d.php?t=854320 Personally I'd wait until money actually changes hands - unusually high bids on online auctions are sometimes withdrawn because the buyer's eyes are bigger than their stomach, or it was just someone trolling the bids.

There are people in the valley up here now, who have moved here. They are building 100K+ cars and trucks, pretty common and these folk have the bucks to pay people to do it. Just talked to a guy who builds 60's Bronco's and makes 30K min on each and sells them fast. so this price on the GTO is kind of shocking, but I am not falling off my chair either. Like Stu says, wait and see on reality of it.

BAT auctions bring stupid money in general. I have heard a percentage of the deals do not actually close. But damn good money if you can close the deal.

Well resale red vert does not hurt but where is the boot cover ? Have had a pair of glasspacks with crossover for years. Once upon a time long long ago there was this contest: drive by an apartment complex and see how many alarms would go off.

Metro is easy. Spent 50,000 miles as a TOAD, front wheels never turned. I almost bought one for my Vixen but would rather have a Firefly.

Are you saying that the VOE Mufflers on the car are Tom Hand's stainless parts?

I know of Tom Hand building 5 or 6 VOE Muffler sets.
A PY member has one set, I will not mention his name, I have a set, a Holley Carb buddy who I worked with has a set, so that is 4 sets of VOE mufflers. Tom's, Mine, My Buddies, and the owner of this car, UNLESS THE VOE MUFFLERS, are original parts.

My Uncle, had ONE of the original VOE Mufflers, the second original muffler was never shipped. So I have had both in my hands.
The Tom Hand stuff is/was really nice.

Tom V.

For the very rich, the price does not matter. Everything I have I earned (well college was on the GI Bill).

Hi Rocky and thanks for pointing this out. Those mufflers were built 4-2006. My records show they were the fifth set. I am up to about triple that amount now and in Chicago at the MCACN, I get to see the latest set although they won't be in action. They may be on display. The bonus is I get to see a real set on the original car from the commercial in 1970.

The new sets are built slightly different (on the spring side) after I received some OEM info that was not available back in the 2003 to 2009 time frame.

Tom V, thank for your kind comments. Hope you are doing well.

It certainly is a beautiful car, and looks to be a top notch resto. Good for the seller! Def. out of my pay grade. Big question, is the exhaust cut out factory? I was told on another forum that the build sheet was present and said it was. I have not seen the build sheet. If original I would say that adds a bit of value, if not original def. a cool feature but shouldnt add that much to value.

Looking back at the auction that is a hell of a lot of documentation for that car.

It is a very nice, well presented car.

The cars is WAYYYYY high in the back. Ugly on a drop top. The formula wheel / hub could ONLY be Black in 1970.
RPO VOE.. thats the 100k option on a NOM car thats a highly desirable model.
Stop and think with your nose. It's 1970 and the Humbler has SUNOCO 260 in it with LEAD.
THE knob is pulled, sensation overload....
back then it was a little more than sound. I liked the smell of that fuel, burned, or unburned....
There, I said it..
Long live VOE !!

I follow BAT and saw that and many others bring stupid money and many times the reserve is not met. Makes you wonder.
