Default rag joint replacement on 76 trans am question

Looks like I will need to replace . I know to remove the clamp bolt to the steering box input shaft but how do I make room to remove the rag. Do I just collapse the intermediate shaft? Or do I have to completely remove it. I don't want to break something. Thanks for any help, Mike

X2. You just remove the bolts on the rag joint and the shaft will move enough to put a new rubber coupler in. Just make note of the bolt orientation and placement of all the hardware first because it has a specific assembly.

On big Pontiacs, I remove the 3 bolts from the box and move it forward a bit

<— That's right. You do usually have to remove the bolts from the steering gear and swing it away from the frame.

Also if your MY had the "energy absorbing" steering column, remember that you have to be careful with the column shaft so you don't collapse it.
