Try running an 8psi radiator cap versus 15psi on the next revival.
And maybe a late model type overflow expansion tank. It might be a (thin) extra layer of prevention if there is another interior pit that is near the borderline. |

Correct; pin holes rarely show up during a magnaflux inspection. The best way to fix them is to sleeve the cylinder in question and re-bore.

And the hits keep coming. I just scratched the damn thing when I pulled the line on my air compressor thinking I had more slack than I did and it tipped over. I am gonna have about 500 in that scratch repair I would say

Don't beat yourself up too much over the scratch. Stuff like that happens to all of us eventually.

I had a long handled pruning shear fall off a shelf a door slammed from wind, it's a 4.5" scratch down to the metal on the quarter panel. Uhg.
I tossed some touch up paint on it, totally visible, but nothing I can do about it at the moment. Technically, the whole quarter needs to be repainted. Chit happens. Had it at a car show when I 1st got it driving, and if I had $5 for everyone that came up and said 'You know you have a scratch back here?' I could have paid for the repair. Like duh, it has touch up paint on it, think it's self-healing or something!?! .

Magnaflux won't pick up a thin area on a block, have to sonic check it. Which, I thought was SOP for any used block, but guess some don't.
Things go bad when you're in a hurry, I too advise to have the block checked before moving forward, regardless if you lose drive-time. Now the question is, is the shop you're using competent enough to do a sleeve? Search it here and you make a determination. Many are not competent enough. .

I just wanted to take a minute to say thanks to all you guys who have supported and given good advice over the literal years of this. Some advice better than others and of course even the vitriol spewed has had some merit sometimes. Going on 7 1/2 years since I bought the car. That doesn’t seem possible.

If you had an engine buider that knows you would not have to turn to online forums for information and direction. That is the confusing part for me about all of this.
Another thing you might want to consider once you get this engine stuff sorted out is a rev limiter (I suggested before) and maybe baby it for a year or two so you get some enjoyment with the family under your belt. Drive it like a 2 barrel smogger type of deal. The most fun I had with my car was when it was moving on its own power not a sitting all shiny. Wishing you some good luck |

I trust my engine builder 100%. More GOOD information with which to formulate questions for him though is never a bad thing in my minds eye. I also bought an MSD street fire box with rev limiter

Every scratch and ding on my car happened in my garage. All were put there by me, myself and I. The worst one happened because I overloaded a wall mounted cabinet with paint cans and one night it pulled off of the wall and landed directly on the rear edge of my trunk lid. I've actually started to enjoy driving my car even more now that I don't worry about every little rock chip.

A few weeks ago I was doing some work in my shop. I have my little air compressor up against my shop wall about 3 feet away from the car. I turned it on and went about other business. When I came back, the front of the compressor had walked across the floor from it's vibration. The handle was up against my rear quarter vibrating away. It put a tiny chip in the paint, about 3 mm size. Thankfully no dent. The compressor has never moved like that before. That pissed me off.
But, since I drive the car it does get it's share of chips and the rest of it. That's just the way it goes.

In 1988, three years after it was painted, I was at my dad's house in the hills and the neighbor asked me to move the car down into the back area so he could use dad's driveway to get a hot tub delivered. I obliged, but for the hour my car was parked in the backyard outside the garage, a squirrel chewed off a 10 inch long, 2 pound green pinecone and it fell about 110 feet and hit the trunklid of the GTO. To this day, it looks like someone took a ball peen hammer and hit the trunk lid super hard. Nice dent the size of a quarter. And double walled, so no easy way to remove without repainting. I'll fix it if I ever paint the car again. The single stage is holding up pretty good for a 38 year old paint job!

Sleeve is in the block and everything seems good. Since its a free job he is not processing it at the front of the line but it should be done soon

I’ve been thinking about both your dilemma and you originally stated goals for the car. Did you ever consider an LS swap (like your FIL’s car)?
I know LS is not popular here on the board with the pure Pontiac types but they are a lot of bang for the buck, perform well in stock form with OEM reliability and great mileage for a car meant to be driven. It’s not to late to sell your repaired motor and headers to recoup some cash, source a low mileage LS motor and do the conversion.

"pure Pontiac types" are the only types.
Its about the engine more than the car. Put a LS in her and its no longer a Pontiac. Might as well be a Chevy. LS conversions are the worst. Without the Strato Streak engine this site does not exist. |

I have a $400 5.3 in my '64 GTO right now. Love it! Can't wait to upgrade! 455 w/cracked block is on the engine stand. Kept most all of the parts. Sold the AL heads and roller cam to fund the transplant. Sill have some damn good #96 heads on the shelf. I'll keep my out for a rolling chassis after I retire. Best of luck getting your car running!!! |

If one installed an LS engine and used Chevy rocker arms would that cause the cylinder to leak water... Asking for a friend.
