Default Aluminum Tri-Power

I'm thinking about getting an Aluminum 66 Tri-Power Intake.

I already have a complete stock 66 intake, carbs etc, but the Cast Iron manifold seems to weigh about a ton.

I have not seen any threads on these lately.

Are the Aluminum Manifolds good quality?

Where can I get one, and where can I get the price on one?

I think offenhauser and edelbrock both make a 66 aluminum manifold. Ebay will give you a good idea on price. 300-500 would be my guess. I seem to recall pontiac iron manifolds to flow pretty well

The Orignal parts group offers a repo 66 trip set up in aluminum and it goes for 378 bucks.
I cant say how much power it will make, but in the Sept issue of HHP mag, a near stock 65 manifold was reworked to fit the larger 66 center carb and that 432 cid motor made 473 HP.

Edelbrock does not offer a tri manifold any longer.

I've seen photos posted on other threads of the aluminum tripower manifolds that show very poor port alignment and very poor overall quality. I would run the original manifold.

We've seen at least two different versions of the aluminum repro '66 intake. We've bought 5 from Ames and all have been very nice. No re-work or welding, good fit and finish. When "porting", the typical areas the factory intake needs, the repro does, as well. JUST enough "room" for am Air IV opennings.

We've also seen two sent to us for porting by custiners, bought either on E-Bay or other "discount" house. They had significant rework and welding, including belt-sanding on the upper surfaces to remove slag. They looked pretty bad. I have no idea, the source. Avoid "bargains".

FWIW

Thanks for the info.

I was wondering if there was more than one supplier, or perhaps different production runs?

The Edelbrock and Offy tripowers were for '64 back, only. I've never seen one for '65-'66 that wasn't factory. Barry Grant made his Six Shooter 3x2 for '65 up but it used his carbs, not Rochesters.

Have the 1st. release repo. intake on my 64 that made 424HP. 485 torque @ the rear wheel . Have had a few from the Parts Place with poor port alignment , gasket / bolt holes are good but all ports on 1 side is shifted into the next port opening . Make sure you check your gasket to port alignment .

I have a PY (1st Run) Pontiac aluminum intake that is very nice. 1st run stuff was designed and made by a different guy vs the later knock-offs, I believe.

I also have a 6-Shooter BG Intake (that will take Holley 2-bbls) that needed three runs at casting the manifold to get a good piece. Then I sent it to Mr. P-Body and Dave Wilcox to have it ported. Dave did a very nice job on the intake.

So there is a LOT of variation in the aluminum manifolds and what quality they are.

Apparently the latest AMES stuff is pretty good (rev post #6)

I have had 2 of the early 1st runs and both were similar to what you have shown.

Depends on the amount of core shift. Some of the repops have a LOT.

What Tom said...

We'ev found the nicer ones work out nicely. There's "enough meat" to maintain the corss-sectional area when "matched" to Ram Air IV size ports. You WILL "break through" at the turns in both 7 and 8 runners at the rear... We use Moroso "A/B Epoxy" to repair the holes.
