I can’t figure out why none of the aluminum head manufacturers won’t put Helicoils or TimeSerts in locations where steel bolts are going to be threaded in and torque applied. The combination of steel bolts and aluminum threads triggers galvanic corrosion.

Edelbrock exhaust bolt holes are helicoiled, but they are the only holes to receive the coils.

If you check my long-running thread you will see that I recently discovered that on my 87cc round port heads the rocker stud threads are also coiled.

Sorry to hijack the thread. This weekend whilst at the race track, I was re jetting my carb and stripped a thread for the float bowl to carb body. Its a holley 800 double pumper. Presumably I can helicoil this? What thread size is it?

#12-24 which is a standard UNC thread.

It's all about time and money. When I get my hands on a Pontiac aluminum head, the first thing I do is install coils in every single threaded hole in the heads. If I don't, I get bit every single time. 2 recent examples. KRE hi ports for Eric's road racer. Installed coils in every hole except the spark plugs. Removing the plugs after hand installing them after painting the heads, 2 of the plugs came out with the threads! The holes were left very jagged after CNC porting and I missed it. Had to time cert the new heads. My personal CNC Edelbrock D-ports. I Heli-coiled every threaded hole in the heads except the intake manifold. Of course the left rear hole ended up stripping out where the throttle bracket attaches for the cross shaft. Had to heli-coil it with the head installed in the car. Very difficult. It takes me a full working day to install all the coils in a manual mill, locating every hole center. So it is a bunch of work. But worth it, IMO. I do not put inserts in spark plug holes, but I learned my lesson and check and massage the threads on every head, especially if it was CNC ported. Live and learn.

Its very important to pay attention to thread engagement into aluminum as well

i usually bottom tap blind holes and use a bolt that catches maximum threads, sometimes start out with a long bolt and trim it down using a thinner washer under the bolt head trim the bolt until it clamps then put thicker washer under the bolt head

That's an excellent point. This is exactly what happened in my post above with the throttle bracket. I was installing the new bathtub intake and did not take into account the slightly different stack height of that intake and the bracket, bolt, washer. Only had 4 threads of engagement and they pulled right out. Just a dumb mistake. Heli-coils are much more forgiving in aluminum and have greater strength.

Aluminum threads are why I've always worried about using a carb plate on an intake to lift a motor!

Got the 3/8 kit from auto zone ,had to buy the 25/64 bit from lowes fixed in under an hour double checked depth of hole.Tightening it down felt much more secure.I was going the time cert if it was a helicoil that got pulled out.Glad I didn't have to I've heard the time certs are much more weaker
