I picked up a Pontiac HEI ignition system with the intention of putting it on my 69 G.P.428 h.o. to replace the point system.I don't know what motor size or year it came from, can I just put it in or should I send it to a speed shop to get calibrated to my motor? Has anyone ever done this swap? Or is it just as well to leave the old system on? I'm also planning on trying it at the dragstrip this weekend wondered if my 800 cfm double pump holley would fit and improve my e.t. I currently have the original Q-Jet on.

the hei should be a drop in swap. just make sure you get a full 12 volts to the dist power feed. the points run off of 6 volts due to a resistance wire. also you may want to buy a recurve kit and install in the new dist. about $15.00 and a simple install.
in my opinion the 850 is way to much carb. mike

Louis, The Nix is right-on. The Wiring harness has a pink-jacketed ignition wire [with the tiny print 'resistance wire']. You will be wanting to remove it at the fuse block, and replace it [with a GM copper wire of sufficient length from another GM fuse block].
HEI curve kit cost me $10 last week at a local speed shop. Go figue, that I did an extensive HEI rebuild, and curve set, then went and bought the recurve kit and tossed it [unused] in my ignition parts box. [This message has been edited by Half-Inch Stud (edited 08-22-2000).]
