There are plenty of nay-sayers, as well as success and failure stories, for either option (roller or flat tappet).
For whatever my opinion is worth, I prefer a roller. Solid or hydraulic. For solid roller, Maintenance is simple, and probably not needed much. The biggest downside to a roller (imo) is the expense. But If your budget allows for it, that’s the route I would go. I ran a solid roller in a street car (400 stroker buuld), and it was great. I currently have a HFT (2802) in my street 400 (because we built it for dad, and he wanted to keep it “cheap”), and there’s an annoying ticking sound in the valve train on the passenger side (even-numbered cylinders) of the block. I fear it’s a lobe wearing, but haven’t dug into it yet so maybe not. Have tried adjusting it out but no luck. Runs fine so letting it ride for a while. When I have to replace it, I’ll go with a roller.
