After chatting to 2 A/C specialists out here the trunk-mount option plain can't handle our weather. We have had a week of +110-120deg days and nights down to low 90s. In a big car I am going to need a lot of cooling grunt.

Questions are also being asked about me changing to aluminum heads, and fitting a big alloy radiator and shroud to help keep the car cool once i restrict flow with a big A/C condenser. I will look at the radiator first, cylinder heads 2nd as the expense just isnt warranted when i have just had these heads done!

I might look into a trunk unit for mine as my cabin is alot smaller than yours. The compressor mounting might be fun but not impossible.

Actually (and this may surprise you given my car is something like twice the length of yours) our cabins actually have similar amounts of space. Yes, my car is a reverse tardis!

Do you have much/any space under the dash?

Cheers for the tip but it is all good - i actually found a Vintage Air Gen 4 Magnum for sale through a local supplier as cheap as i could get it from the USA!

I spent a couple of days at the olds place getting the barge ready to go to United Speed Shop.

I pulled the dashboard and whizzed it back to bare metal, then covered it in Oxytech Easy Phos which will stop any rust forming. I tried painting the ashtray and glovebox in a couple of different "mint green" options but neither worked out how i liked.










I also removed the heater and blower motor, full wiring loom, gauges and cluster.




Today i rolled the big barge out of the garage for the first time since July 2015, and it is now residing in Newcastle about 2hrs north of Sydney.













Ill update as Ryan does more work!

Aaaaaaaaand the Vintage Air unit turned up at work while I was off yesterday. Ordered 530pm on Friday, at work before 10am on Monday!

Vintage Air is the way to go unless you're doing a 99 point restoration: lighter than the factory assembly and far more efficient.

Lol. My car has air bag suspension, wrong cylinder heads/intake, mag wheels, Mooneyes steering wheel, will be wrong carpet, paint colour and trim, too.

Some phone updates from my mate Ryan working on the barge (in a 120degF heatwave we've had for the last month).

The gaping hole in the quarter has been closed up


The exhaust has been started and should be fully finished up by the end of this week


Floors painted ahead of being sound-proofed



More Vintage Air goodies turned up. Given the weather we've had for the last month I'm stoked I decided to run air con in the barge!

Ryan has been busy on my nugget despite the heat. He's pulled the old air tank, valves, controller and gauge out, getting ready to install the new Accuair ENDO-VT tank and new twin Viair 480C compressors, plus F/B/S/S air lines. Well, he will install it whenever AirRide.com.au get me the tank - it was meant to be here January so I paid up front. No tank, no news. Other people are getting their tanks so I'm starting to really get the dirts about the complete lack of updates about where my (expensive) stuff is.



He hung the front guards and tucked the wheels up to check clearance for the new exhaust. This thing had a single system (using a crossover behind the block to passenger side, down to a Y-pipe) so it's all new.


Ryan has tacked up the front of the exhaust, including this mint cross-over.




The exhaust will dump before the diff - should sound good with these Magnaflow chambers plus the long-branch headers


They string-lined it to check ground clearance when aired out


He's also painted the floor in KBS paint (an Aussie variant of your Por15) and will get onto the sound proofing and wiring next week




Ryan worked out my BF thermo fan wasn't going to fit so he has ordered a 16" SPAL and had this neat custom shroud laser cut. I'll get him to powdercoat it gloss black like the rest of the engine bay.


Normally I wouldn't take styling tips from a minitruck but in person this thing's spearmint paint and caramel trim work really well. As a plus, this thing also has a 1UZ, apparently.

I had to order more A/C gear for this thing as i only had half the hardware required. Ryan from United Speed Shop put me onto Speedy Air Spares in QLD www.speedyairspares.com.au who hooked me up with heaps of knowledge about what will work and what won't. Australia doesn't let you run old style A/C so everything has to be R134a and modern style which i dont mind given our run of record hot weather.

Vintage Air supplied me a bracket that fits both the Pontiac V8 and a modern Sanden-style compressor. I could have opted for a stock-style Poncho/GM compressor but i want my A/C working like a modern system and '60s A/C is pissweak.

Speedy suggested the Sanden SD5S14 v12 unit (part #CMS6626 on his site) as it is a 5cyl unit that pumps like a horny teen and is modern industry standard thanks to quality bearings, better pulley design, hose/fitting attachments etc



The condenser needs to be as big as can be fitted in front of the stock radiator, and behind the bonnet release (640mm by 380mm) so i chose the #CN6285 at 575mm / 355mm / 22mm.

I have heard great things about his Air-o-Crimp fittings that allow smaller diameter hose and tighter turns than conventional fittings & hose. Once we set the system out we will order the fittings and hose.

All up that is around $700 shipped, taking my A/C install to about $2300, without fittings or hoses... or labour to install and charge. I'd say $4k once done. (All in Aussie dollars so 125% of USD)

Oh yeah, and i am not painting is spearmint any more.

We started using Sanden A/C compressors in aircraft over 20 years ago. If they'll support the A/C system on a King Air 350 with 1,050 ESHP, a Pontiac won't tax it.

Yeah, that's what I was saying - the Sanden is a big jump forward compared to the old school GM compressor.

It's particularly prevalent Down Under given we have had a couple of months of +40degC (120degF) in a row.
