Default Speedo Cable issue?

My speedometer was working perfectly until I took my 1970 in for a new exhaust system. The speedometer cable, outer casing melted and seized to the inner steel cable right after the exhaust work. Obviously he moved the cable around during the installation process which caused the issue. I installed a new cable but the speedometer is not working. When I unscrew the cable from the tranny and spin the inner cable with a drill motor while my assistant watches the speedo, he can see that the speedometer works.

I then inspected the plastic speedo gear that pushes in to the tranny and it looks ok. I then installed a different plastic speedo gear and buttoned everything up but the speedo is still not working! Any ideas on what my next move should be? Thanks.

Perhaps it did damage to the inner speedo gear, not sure what trans but often requires the tail to be removed.

The cable has a flat side that must be engaged within the gear in Transmission.

Yes I realize that but when I insert the cable in to the gear, the speedo still does not move.

Check to make sure the casting that holds the colored gear is fully inserted into the tailshaft housing.

Some " driven" speedo gears have different depth to the transmission where they mesh the " drive" gear. Don't just go by color, make sure application is right and make sure the drive gear is ok. Can do that by hand probably
