Steve,I noticed you do not have trim rings on your wheels.Did you try the repos,or did you purposely leave them off? Just wondering as i have a set of them, but have not installed them yet.

The Trans Am in 1972 did not use a trim ring on the 15x7 honeycombs, although everyone seems to put them on the 72s. Also, once you install them it permanently scratches the rim, so you are stuck. And it takes some repair work to get them perfect again.

In case anyone wants to see some more info on the car it is on the cover and featured in the Jan 2012 issue of High Performance Pontiac. It was photographed back in May, 2011 at the Performance Years Car Show in PA.

Congrats Steve! your work on that car is worthy of the feature.....and in expedient time for publishing.
It's been three years since HPP did the feature on my SD and have yet to see it published.
Oh well.....

Larry, your not the only one! Spent two days of taking pictures at a number of locations let alone the time and effort in preparing and travel. Waste of time and money!

Have you guys checked in with them recently to see if anything happened? Having worked in the car magazine business way back when, it was not an uncommon occurrence to have a film failure, camera failure or some other million to one glitch where the whole shoot got ruined. I once had fedex lose an entire weekend's worth of photoshoots, back in the old days when we used film. These days, one little memory card goes bad and youre screwed.

Thanks for the offer. That's a beauty you've got there: right year, right color but I'm holding out for that SD...someday!

Talking Trade

Why would you want to trade down from an HO to a SD?

LOL

I feel the need to start another mega-thread, and i figure I'll try for a younger car this time (by one year).

That is, unless someone has an original black 71 or 72 Formula 455HO with a stick. :-)

Your Car Is INSANE!!! the '72 TAs have always been my favorite. Since you're in Jersey too, now I know who to question when I (eventually) get out of college & restore my dad's '72 Formula lol... I want to do the exact same type of restoration, with the red primer and over spray & the markings & all... You must have done a huge amount of research to produce such a high quality job. Hats off to you sir!

PS: anyone know where to find HPP on a news stand? Unfortunately I'm not a subscriber... yet... & I definitely want to pick up the Jan issue now

Glad to hear you are following in your Dad's footsteps. Sounds
like a great family project.

I found my copy of the magazine at Barnes and Noble.

Yes, sometimes it's a struggle though. He used to be in the garage every night working on his cars when I was little, but then we moved and family life got in the way and everything. Now that he's older he likes to relax and watch sports just about every night, and he uses the garage more for storage than wrenching nowadays... But just like he showed me back in the day, I think it's time I show him the way. After my '72 drag car is done, and before I try to restore his to factory specs, I would like to build a '73 GTO like his that he had in high school. He had to sell that car in the 80s to help buy a house after he married my mom, so I'm hoping I can build one to replicate his old ride and maybe I'll trade him for his '72 haha. If after completing my '72 I still can't get him out in the garage on a regular basis, then I have a pretty good feeling that the GTO will get him out there with me, and then it will be back to old times... only now he will be the one sitting on the seat handing me wrenches through the floor and holding the light for me haha...
