Default Having 1962 horn button and ring rechromed - reassembly question

Separating the 2 pieces looks easy enough, just drill out the rivets.

What is the preferred way to re-attach? I'd prefer to run a small tap down the hole and use machine screws, but I don't want to make the pot metal fall apart. Are rivets the only way to go here?

A close-up picture would help. But if you decide to use rivets and are concerned about blowing out the pot metal holes, I would use all aluminum rivets, including the stem. Steel rivet may put too much pressure on the hole like a screw could.
