Default Billet cam shaft

The directions in the new holley Dual Sync distributor I just bought said that the new distributor comes with a hardened steel gear that should be compatible with all hydraulic roller camshafts except it would not be compatible with some Billet camshafts. Does anyone know if the voodoo camshafts are billet? Summit doesn’t know, Holley told me to call Lunati and Lunati put me on hold twice and never came back. If I bought this polymer gear and went thru all this gear change BS for nothing I am really going to be pissed

Pretty sure it's going to be billet. I'm not aware of any cast steel or austempered ductile iron cores for Pontiac engines and Crane was the only company putting iron gears on the back of their cams from the factory that I've seen........Cliff

Seems like your first call would be to Paul. Easy answer from 1 phone call, instead of another question to the masses.

I have driven Paul crazy enough over the last year trust me plus why bother a busy businessman when someone who is reading these forums for leisure may know the answer. I tried calling the manufacturers but no one believes in customer service anymore.

Summit isn't a manufacturer, and Holley hasn't had anything to do with Voodoo for a decade or more. Being on hold isn't a bad thing, it means they're looking for someone that can correctly answer your question. The people that know are making themselves useful, somewhere other than reception. The fact that it happened twice? When you called again, that cycle started anew.

While you were in Law Enforcement, how quick were your non-emergency contacts? I know you're not big on patience, but that's just how it works. HTH

No I mean never came back like 20 minutes never came back. How long does it take for the cam tech to say to the cam grinder “ will our voodoo cam work with a steel gear “

The Pontiac roller cams are all billet. As Cliff said, I do not know of anyone making a Pontiac cam core in Austempered steel[cast]. That's popular with the Chevy's, and are much cheaper than billet.

I think what's important here is to get intimate with the drive gear on your custom ground HR camshaft. Make absolutely sure the drive teeth are free of sharp edges and "tooling" marks, etc.

Here I take a very fine jewelers file to the edges to de-burr them, then a trip to the bead blaster to hit them with ulra-fine glass beads (looks like baking soda). It doesn't remove any material but polishes the lobes instead.

Here's a pic of my bronze distributor gear, been in service since around 2008-2009. The engine has a LOT of drag strip runs, couple of trips to the winners circle at Norwalk, and countless street miles.

On the flip side I set up a distributor with a BOP gear for a very good customer running a 1974 Firebired in FAST. His engine was done elsewhere. He installed the distributor and didn't get a dozen passes on it before it chewed the gear completely up. Tear down/inspection showed the gear had pretty "heavy" tooling marks in it and very sharp edges on the drive teeth....FWIW.....Cliff
