TCI transmission - 4L80 for Pontiacs
This may be old news but this is the first I've heard about it...I was watching a video from DeBoss Garage about their project GTO; they got a new 4L80 transmission from TCI that has a bolt on bellhousing with a Pontiac bolt pattern, so an adapter plate isn't required. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwmXIg5Rfs0

Very nice. The $56 Adapter plate does work fine, but a loose Bell would help make the rebuilding easier.

I tried an adapter plate for my BOP THM400 to LS engine. What a POS! Ended up going with Ultra Bell. Not cheap. But very nice.

Here’s a link to purchase: https://www.tciauto.com/4x-four-spee...80e-based.html
Looks like a sweet set up but $4k is a lot of money. I don’t doubt it’s worth it in the long run so maybe someday. Shipping is free so nice that they included that. Looks like you still need to buy the torque converter and shorten the driveshaft. Close to $5k total and that’s if you install it yourself. Last edited by will slow gto; 08-10-2021 at 03:47 PM. |

Specsheet says the BellHousing only allows 10" converters or less. $4 Trans and $2k converter is $6k add controller. Forget thaaat.
I paid $70 for the 4L80 core with dipstick, Converter and cooling line ends. Add Gasket ans seal rebuild kit, $56 Adapter plate, Vac modulator kit, shortened driveshaft. Been running pretty good. Did a Spare 4L80 in parallel, for good measure. |

Putting a Chevy style trans on a BOP is easy.

Yes, the newer Ultra Bell says it will take some 11" converters. I had to ditch my 13" Continental and picked up a tight 10" Continental. Needed more converter anyway with the smaller engine anyway. Will be converting to manual later. Just didn't need that cost and battle while doing the retrofit to LS. Car is original manual trans. Have all of the Muncie stuff and console. Gonna need bellhousing, flywheel, hydraulic throw-out bearing, etc. Plus would like to go 5 or 6 speed.

Here's the near finished product. I put on a cast pan and cleaned it up since this pic lol. Rebuilder had red RTV on pan gasket (Strange).

I've been thinking of converting my 66 GTO to an automatic, or selling it. I'm getting tired of the 4 speed. I'll keep the 400 engine but thought of going to the 400 turbo with the His and Hers shifter and console. Nothing fancy, and nothing expensive.
