Default Is there a disc-brake specific Rally 1?

Given that the series of Rally IIs had differences in many areas as they evolved from '67 on... wondering if the Rally I went through the same evolution?

Rally Is are my wheel of choice, but new or good used are up there in $$$$. It would burn like hot Morrokide on the back of your legs to drum up a set and find they wouldn't fit after converting to the 11" disc.

These surface from time to time on here, FB Marketplace, CL, etc. Want to go in with both eyes open.

I would contact our sponsor, Ames and ask. The 15's should clear no issue.

I do not think there where any original Rally I wheels available with the disc brake options that started in 67. And as they where discontinued shortly after Disc brakes became an option. But I agree that the 15" reproduction should clear the 2 piston disc brakes, or the later single piston versions. After market disc brake kits would have to be investigated IMO.

Wrong.

Also wrong, 65-68. That's two model years
worth of disc/rally wheel overlap. The new
and popular Rally II wheel had more to do
with the discontinuation (they also fetched
an extra 16 bucks)

AFAIK all 1965-68 Rally I wheels are the KB code wheel.

February 1967 built GTO with original 4 piston front disc brakes here, came with KA stamp Rally 1 wheels. My understanding is that all Rally 1 wheels fit front disc brakes with 4 piston calipers. I have not tried the earlier no stamp wheels or the KB wheels with original disc brakes, so cannot verify. I also have not tried 69 and later single piston calipers compared to 4 piston originals to verify.

To the best of my knowledge and experience, there was no change for the ralley1 wheel from 1965-68. In 1965 and 1966 there was no disc brake option, and in 1967-68 there was the dual piston caliper (which requires more clearance than single piston of 69 and up), and the ralley wheel still fit. It also fit on 1969 and up single piston caliper disc brakes.

I've also never had a ralley 2 wheel that didn't clear factory disc brakes of either generation.

The wheels that do NOT clear are the standard 14x6 stamped wheel. In this case, there is a different offset wheel for disc brake cars. However for those that don't want to search those out, and want to use 14" wheel covers, the 14x7 wheel GM and aftermarket wheel clear both factory disc brake set ups.

Aftermarket disc brake setups are where people run into troubles, and its usually the caliper bracket that requires massaging.

Learned something coming back to this post, I should learn to just not add anything when I am not sure of the facts, probably won't though.

I'll preface this by saying I've never owned a Rally I wheel, and maybe my information is outdated, but I have an article from Classic GTO magazine (remember that one? Lol) from September 1984 that says they had a different wheel for disc brakes, but only produced it for a short time and went back to the standard Rally I. The only difference was the slots in the wheel. That would suggest that any Rally I will clear disc brakes.

Is this information correct? I realize it's 40 years old

Years ago Dick Kreiger had a pair of disc brake rally ones at several swap meet. The slots were tapered and the wheel was side specific. Only time in 40 plus years of doing this seeing these wheels

This is correct, a friend of mine has at least one or two of them.

I remember going to one of the Carlisle PA swap meets in the 80's, and one of the used parts vendors had some Rally I wheels with the odd scoop shaped flares on the 6 openings. It didn't look home-made, but I was still dubious that it was a factory thing. In fact, it seemed almost like the stamping machine that made the center section was a little bit offset to create the asymmetrical opening for the holes. I've wondered about those "disc brake Rally I" wheels ever since. I've never seen a factory media reference to that kind of special Rally I. I'd love someone to shed light on this!

This year at the GoodGuys Columbus show I spoke with a '64 GTO owner. He bought aftermarket 15x7 Rally Is and had disc brake clearance issues. Ironically 15x6 worked great with the disc brakes. I believe the brakes were aftermarket also. So, the lesson is don't take anything for granted, measure, measure, measure and if able, test fit before you invest!

Directional brake cooling scoops.

Never seen anything like that before, pretty wild!

Talk about a rare Pontiac wheel.
