Need advice header flange hole & head
Got top end of motor allmost together and exhaust bolted up, i find that the no.2 header tube is
not lining up with holes in my new aluminum heads. I need no more than a 64th probably takin out of the huge 3/8 flange to line up but im afraid of drilling to hit the head. Is that the only way to go??? I tryed a deburr and not doing much good. Was thinking colbalt drill and taking it easy and see what happens. Bolts are 3/8 so a 11/32 drill bit should do it. |

Don't do something stupid! Take the header off and elongate the hole.

Which hole???
Remove the exhaust pipe first...see if the header will bolt up...then If not, leave exh. pipe off, remove the header bolts one at a time replacing them w/ longer bolts. You might have enough room to use a rat tail file or a dremel tool, so you can stay away from the head...

very front on no.2 tube. closest to front of motor. I an get in the hole with a dremel its just 3/8 thick and looking for a easy way out. It took 2 days to put the header on man i don,t fill up to removing it.

I will assume all your other header bolts are loose? Is the flange cut between the tubes or still there?

straight flange across not separated, no bolts are not loose, everything tight from back to front. just cannot get front bolt in.

Loosen all the bolts a couple of turns so you can shift the header around and the last bolt will most probably go in. If it doesn't, take the header off to open up the culprit hole.

X2....Never tighten a header bolt until all others are started...pretty good rule for any part actually! Also once they are all in tighten each side of a tube equally in steps.

that's for sure a scary situation if trying to drill it like that. Especially when bits like to grab and pull themselves through when you get to the end of your hole. If you could at least get the bolts loose again to the point you could slip a piece of steel plate in behind the flange to block the head and give you a little shield to bang up against. But like has already been said you may be able to just get the bolt in if you just loosen the others. Everyone here knows how tough Pontiac headers are and understand not wanting to loosen bolts that no doubt took forever to tighten, but its better to be safe than sorry.
