Default Air conditioning 1969 firebird need help

1969 firebird A/C car : Things I have done. I have replaced Orings with R134 green, purged system with cleaner , replaced POR with updated tube, compatible Oil for R134.
Compressor is free turns easy. pulled vacuum , it held . I then went to fill system with R134 freon . At that time the Compressor clutch started engaging and dis-engaging over and over. the car did not cool down inside.
the Gauges on the low side Needle was moving Erratic, the High side Needle stayed in the low side of the Gauge .
where do I go from here ? replace the old A-6 Frigidaire compressor with a Vintage air Compressor, and Condenser ? thanks for any help .

Did you weigh the refrigerant into the system?

Are you sure you got all the oil and refrigerant out?

I'm assuming you know that the A6 has an oil sump with a fill plug on the side that you use to drain the old mineral oil. And that's also where you put in the PAG oil. You have to remove the compressor from the car to drain the oil.

What's a "POR"? POA eliminator kit? If so, and the compressor short-cycles with low high-side pressure, that indicates it's low on charge. Or the TXV is clogged/inop.

You'll typically get better performance with R-134a if you convert to a parallel-flow condenser, so keep that in mind too.

Also when converting from R12 to R-134, you only fill the refrigerant to 80% of the original capacity.

That 80% is kind of a rule of thumb, and only if you're using the OEM condenser.

If you convert to a PF (parallel-flow) condenser, the system will take even less than that 80%. You'll have to experiment with the fill amount.

Based on your description of the gauge readings it sounds like the compressor may not be pumping.
How much Freon did you have in it when it was doing this?
Do you have any video showing the gauges while the system is running?
