The glass is perfect, The breather was on till just recently and it is a hydramatic.
The car came from florida originally and theres not a rust hole in it anywhere.

For the stuck valve- try both acrylic lacquer thinner and acrylic enamel reducer (not at the same time). Tap lightly with a brass hammer on the valve tip. If you get any movement at all, blow out around the stem with compressed air, then repeat.

Default Tear It Down Time

I went ahead and pulled the heads, The valves would seat as bad as they are.
It will make it easier to pull the motor with the heads off anyway.
I'm going to re-ring it and do a valve job, Probably have to replace some valves
to cause they look pretty ruff. Heres some pics of the progress.

Any of you guy's got any used valves for a 347-motor?
Maybe Pontirag will see this and let me know what he's got.
I need some used pistons for the 57-wagon motor also.

Thanks GT.

Engine doesn't look bad at all. Do you think the valve stem bores in the heads were harmed at all by removing the old valves? If so, I think you can still buy new oversize-stem valves (+.003"?) from Pioneer. How do the water distribution tubes look? Stainless?

I refuse to answer on these grounds: I've still got the makin's of a '58 engine lying around, so I'll selfishly hold onto my old spare valves!

Actually the guides aren't bad at all, The valves them self are rusted bad.
The heads cleaned up good I sand blasted them today and are washing
them tonight with solvent and laqure thinner.
I sent Pontirag a PM to see what parts he might have.
The tube in one head looks fine haven't checked the other yet.
I'll post some more pics later.

I was going to tell you how I forgot to replace the two small freeze plugs in the intake face of each head on my last build. But I'm having trouble seeing the plugs in that photo- is there still the sheet metal portion of an intake gasket on that head? My excuse was the fact that the intake faces had been milled and repainted so many times that I simply FORGOT what I was looking at! Then I felt even more foolish as I pulled and replaced the intake manifold a half dozen times, thinking the coolant leak was at the gasket. Duh... hope somebody learns from my mistakes...

As rusty as the heads are on this thing I'm going to replace all the freeze plugs.
One of them at the end of the head is rusted threw. After I blasted the heads
I found the weak ones.

I pulled the motor out of the 57, Man I hate pulling theses motors.
There kind of a pain. I'm going to ring it and do a valve job with all
new valves. The cam is starting to wear so I'll use the one out of the
wagon it's in perfect shape or maybe an aftermarket cam. Anyone got
any suggestions on a cam for the 347. Don't want no lope and something
for gas milelage but a little more pep. This is the 10:1 comp motor.
Heres some pics of it on the floor. And some of the engine compartment.

Try Egge Machine Company. I think they still have some early Pontiac V8 camshafts availible.

I ordered the parts for the 347, Be here next week.
Any thoughts on a 068 camshaft with a set of rhoads lifters
for this motor and does anyone have the dur@50 numbers
for this cam? Thanks for any information on this.
I want this to run pretty good and have normal manners
and get decent gas mileage as I plan on driving it on a daily basses.

Thanks GT.

blueghoast,

IMO, a 067 or 068 is a good choice with a valve job.

Unless you have a set on hand, I wouldn't bother with the variable-duration lifters for what I am assuming the end result will be.

Will you install steel exhaust valve seats- to allow driving it thousands of miles on unleaded gas?
Making any changes so that ultra-high-octane gas isn't needed? You might want to consider cutting away one side of the "bathtub" chamber, to get down to around 9:1.

Finely back on line, I got my parts.
Cam+lifters regular lifters, rings, valves and a overall gasket kit.
I can put the short block together, The heads have to go to the
machine shop for a guide and hardened exhaust seats.
Still gota get a freeze plug kit and for the heads too.

GT.

PS. Hope that answers some ??.
