I acquired a set of 180 headers years ago in a SD deal. It was told to me they came from the 366 RA IV Nascar Grand Am. I traded them to Randy Williams for SD parts.

Eric, I have a VSE Herb Adams oil pan (cast aluminum) and can give you exact dimensions
if you send me a PM. I also have the special Oil Pump and Baffle for the pan.

Thanks Tom but I don't need it for my deal. I figured it would be good info to put out for others to consider.

I'm using the Canton T-shaped road race pan with conventional headers.

Eric

I had a sheet metal version on my 366. I always thought it was for a dry sump system because the oil capacity was so small.

That is exactly right as the Herb Adams 64 Tempest ran some of the special "2nd Oil Pump in the block" parts that you have owned.

I was told that some of the Fire Am cars were built with those parts when the engine was also cast to use those parts.

Can you post pics of your parts again Ken?

The 1980 Fire Am he raced at the Daytona 24Hr did indeed use a 455 SD that had the inbuilt oiling system provisions in the block that adapted to his system. There were a number of F/A's built that had a variety of engines, so some had Oldsmobile V8's and SBC's like 305's from factory.

Glad to see that the conversations with Herb (for hours) at the Edsel Ford Estate car show concerning the Pontiac History
can help others. I miss Tom Nell's conversations, over the phone. He passed way too soon in his life.

Wild !

Seems like they could throw a lot of heat under the oil pan , unless I'm looking at something wrong.

Thanks to all for sharing their pictures of the oil pans and headers.
Never seen these before.

I have some pictures of 66-67 GTO headers that are "almost" as wild as these.
They unbolt in sections.
Pictures are trapped right now

The headers I had on my 64 GTO were a 3 section (for each side) set made by JR Headers.

You could take the pieces apart with a couple of simple tools. Flat Collectors for ground clearance.

They did leak a bit though.

Tom V.

Wish you had a few pictures with a better quality image.

Historical Pictures for sure.

Reminds me of the Hedman headers I ran on one of my drag cars, sure made removal and installation a breeze since they were in pieces.

The Mad Dog headers I am going through fitting on my car right now are multi piece. The tubes for 7 & 8 require going through the inner fender well and actually loop under the frame and tuck back into the collector. Nice headers but the initial fit is a pain.
When I was researching headers I contacted the Headers by Ed guy. He used to make headers for one of the big Pro Stock names in the 80s era. Back when Pro Stock was actually good. Talking Glidden-Shepherd caliber. He made a set of headers for testing that were made just to fit in the most efficient way. Not equal length.

They ran great but when the driver found out they were not equal length he asked him to go through the trouble of making a set equal length. And they made less power.

The driver had him put the other set back on and those are the headers he used for a very successful season.
So to Ed the equal length thing for maximum power was not true in all cases.

I have a set of the headers and a couple of the pans as well. From O'l Pinion Head's photos, it looks like there was more than one design.

The VSE catalog sold the aluminum oil pan and baffle as a wet sump system. The dry sump system used the aluminum pan as well, but it had bungs welded into it for the dry sump lines.

Here are the wet and dry sump systems offered in the VSE Catalog and High Performance Handbook. You can see the dry sump pan is a modified version of the wet sump pan with the sump even more restricted and additional fittings.
The wet sump pan was meant to be used with an external oil cooler as well.

For a while I had a Late Model Asphalt car with 180 headers on a SBC. Sounded like a giant crotch rocket motorcycle!

Decades ago when I came up with that set of VSE 180 degree headers & alum pan, there were numerous extra primary pipe sections & a complete loose set of round port flanges in the box. In my initial pic, it had the #8 primary tube incorrectly routed where it came out of the flange. Ended up reconfiguring the #8 primarybpipe very close to the correct bends. Looking closely at the pics of the nest of drivers side primary tubes, both sets are identical.

The "Grey Ghost" was later in life sold to the Sporl Family and was very competitive.
It had the hidden Oil tank behind the firewall and the "extra set of gears to pump the
oil out of the sump and the block with THREE oil passages (in the block vs two factory
oil passages).

http://www.speedhunters.com/2016/08/gray-ghost-rides/

For sure the Pontiac guys were cheating on the oil system on the engine.

Tom V.

(Later the car was sold to the Peterson Family.) I WORKED ON THAT CAR ENGINE
