Default 69 Lemans Sticky Steering Wheel

Not much info in the archives. Factory vinyl wheel that is very sticky, almost greasy feeling. Any solutions to fix?

There has been a lively discussion about this on V8Buick.com. The most recent "cure" for this was to wipe/rub a dryer sheet on the wheel.

Lol. I'll see if I can get away with that.

Well, guess it doesn't hurt to try. I'll check V8Buick and see what other ideas they have.

It’s years of dirt, grease and oils from your hands. Try spray on upholstery cleaner. Like Sonax. And a clay bar. You will be amazed at what comes up. Also will work on the console lid. As those get sticky as well.

Well, I tried a couple different things that seemed to help but then I remembered reading somewhere some time ago about wiping it down with lacquer thinner. Tried it and that worked very well. Thanks.

I don’t think it’s years of dirt and grease- I think it is oils being released from the vinyl/plastic. I have found the ’tub of towels’ at O’reily to be fairly good at cleaning the wheel up.

Agreed on the composition of the 69 wheels. I've had a couple dozen. They all were slimy since the mid-70s. I have an NOS wheel dated 1970 that is still beautiful, no issue.
