I believe that size was originally only used on Chrysler Imperials - I've seen a few of them restored to original, and always wondered what those tires would look like on our cars.

I’ve run 235/70/15 with no issues, although I had 4.5” bs on 7” rims. Also ran 8” cheater slicks on same wheels with no problem.

Still struggling with tire decision. Does anyone know the proper size/width of the "whitewall" back for a 62? Current tires look to be about an 1". I've seen some less and some more in my current search.

I can say for '63 it was 1".

That is what my current 62 has but struggling to find this size. Found smaller, a little larger than .5 and others about 1.5". One manufacturer wouldn't guarantee the size of the whitewall. I think I can get them through Cooker but their costs are excessive (in my opinion). Ugh. I may be forced into blackwalls.

Here's a little matrix I made balancing tire size, white wall size and price. These are from the Summit catalog.

I ended up going with the P215, which was a little smaller than I wanted but went with those due to price.

Here's a comparison of the earlier 5/8" stripe vs the new 1" ww.

I wasn't enamored at first but warmed up to the 1" when I reviewed my pictures from back in the day.

I like the 1". I have 15's on my red 62 and blackwall 14's on my other 62.

I have installed and driven the P225/75/15 tires I mentioned near the beginning of the thread. They look good, have excellent traction and ride nice. Not much of a smoke show with nearly 500 HP. Pretty impressed. 3/4" whitewall. Bought on Amazon $89.00 each. Fit my budget vs crazy "collector" car vendor prices. Only down side if this matters to you, Made in South Korea. Nexen NPriz AH5. No 14" sizes available unfortunately. BTW, I put about 1600 miles on them this summer.

I've seen those. Do you believe there is any significant difference in handling between the 75 and 70 series tires?

I honestly don't know. This car only had 75 series tires on it since I have owned it. The P235/75/15 tires it used to have on the rear were very tight to the wheel well lip. Only 1/2" clearance. Not sure 70's would have fit with these 8-lug wheels.

Without any doubt, the biggest single thing I have done to my car for handling improvement was adding a 1" rear sway bar. It completely changed the cornering ability of the car. There is a stupid roundabout right near my house. Without the bar, 25 MPH, plowing away, squealing tires. With the bar, 35 MPH, still plowing some but no tire squeal. Not going to win an autocross anytime soon, but at least it maintains it's composure at posted speeds. Also much better traction and less wheel hop under power. I have KYB gas shocks on all four corners as well. Car had the original 60 year old Delco shocks on it. Made about 15 miles from my house. Kinda cool.

My car currently has 225/70/15 tires. 75 series would reduce cruising rpms....not a bad thing. I like the idea of the sway bar as the car plows like a typical 62 going around corners hard. Back in the day .(late 60's), I always ran 78 series on my 62s.
