Default Hood rattles a lot.

My new 62 Catalina project has a very shaky hood. Meaning like the sheet metal in the middle of the hood vibrates. Especially the drivers side, when you crank the engine on you can watch the drivers side hood panel oil can up and down.

Closer inspection shows that under the hood there is some sort of RTV or something that is supposed to stick the hood panel above to the webbing below.

Should I just knock the old stuff out and run some body sealer on there? Any specific product I should use?

I learned something about 62 Pontiac hoods recently. I had to have my hood modified underneath for clearance to accept the Bathtub intake I bought. The hood is made in 3 layers, not the typical 2 like later model hoods. There is the outer skin and double bracing, 2 layers underneath. The layers are all spot welded together and there is some sort of thick body sealer to dampen vibration between layers. It is not RTV. More like a hard clay material. I am sure a body shop expert can chime in with what is best to use. See pics of 3 layer construction. No wonder they are so heavy!

I figured it wasnt RTV, but I knew people would know what I was talking about when I said it.

I was actually looking for broken welds because I assumed that is what happened. Some welds to the bracing broke loose but I didn't see any. So I started wondering if the sections closer to the center were just held together chemically with that clay stuff. I will look again and try to find some bad welds.

There are other brand options. This is the one I use.

Sweet!

So I would just knock out the old material and lay a new bead of that?

Yes, clean out both surfaces as best you can. Apply it as close to the center of the matting surfaces as possible, it does expand a lot. I would practice on a piece of cardboard to see how much it does expand.
