Question Replacement parts for a "survivor" car

I'm trying to help my sister get some parts for her 1967 Firebird 400. She is hoping to not spend a fortune. But these do need to be parts that look like they belong due to this car being a 28,000 mile "survivor" that has been in our family since 1971.

The car has a rectangular manual rearview mirror and she would like to get a round one like it would have originally had. I am assuming an NOS one is out(haven't been able to find one/no idea what they bring). Do the repop ones look like the originals? I think I read on here that the supposedly "better" repop ones are actually too loose as far as holding their adjustment, is that correct?

The thing the car really needs is some brake work. I know the master cylinder just started to leak. It may need a wheel cylinder or two as well, I'm not sure on that yet. I was reading a bit and apparently the master cylinder has numbers on it. Are they difficult to rebuild? OR Is there a good place to send it to be refurbished?

Thanks in advance.
Justin

I've been looking at master cylinders and I have another question. What is the correct master cylinder for a '67 with manual drums? The master cylinder that is on there(untouched since Dad bought the car in '71) is the "normal" type with a lid secured by the thin metal rod that flips over the top. I see these listed by some suppliers as correct. However, I also see some suppliers listing one with a bolt on lid as being correct for this car. I suppose it's possible that the master cylinder was replaced very early in the life of the car, though it seems unlikely. So which is correct?

Here is a pic of an original manual brake 67 master cylinder on my 326 car. Should be the same. Lines are SS from the Right Stuff Detailing. They should have what you need. Website is getdiscbrakes.com

Good deal. That's what this car looks like also. I just started freaking out when I saw some places listing the one with the bolt on cap.

masters aren't hard to rebuild. if you plan on keeping the car for a while, sending it off to White Post Restorations to have sleeved and painted black is a good idea. The wheel cylinders can be rebuilt or sleeved by White Post also

Thanks!

She definitely plans to keep the car forever.

NOS outside rear view mirror can be found they were used on Camaros, Novas and Corvairs so they made a few. Part number is 3909197. I just found one. They go for $100-180.

I heard repos are hit or miss holding adjustment. Not sure visual how close they are, never had a repo, one thing would be no date in the glass if that's important.

NOS would be nice. But, even a repop would be an improvement as someone(possibly the used car dealer) had replaced the mirror with a rectangular one by the time Dad got the car in '71.

Does anyone happen to know the part number for a NOS one?

As a "survivalist" I generally have a negative view of repro anything but I must admit the repro rectangular (68+) mirrors are really nice looking and rigid. Every NOS rectangular mirror I've ever come across was way too loose for use. I don't know if the earlier round NOS mirrors have the same issue?

I also have a 67 Firebird survivor car. Mine is a 326 HO with 26,800 miles and original paint. Two years ago the master cylinder started to leak. I purchased an AC Delco rebuild kit and did the job myself. Very easy to do if the bore of the cylinder is in good shape and you have the right tools. As others have suggested, sending it out for a stainless sleeve may be a better idea if the bore is pitted. The replacement master cylinders they have today do not look like the originals. On a survivor car it's important to keep the original. When I rebuilt the one for my car I did not paint it or detail it in any way. I just cleaned it and put it back in. It looks like it was never removed and continues to blend in with the patina of the engine compartment.
