62 Bonneville wiper motor
Tackling another issue on a recent purchase: the motor's depressed park sequence is unsynchronized (clashing) and wiper sweep is too much on the driver's and too little on the passenger side. The transmission assembly looks correct and undisturbed. I took the motor back plate off and the internals don't exactly match the service manual photo, especially the position of the nylon gear at park and the bar on the end of the shaft. The stamped number on the motor is 5044424. I'm thinking a previous owner installed a tandem motor--this would explain a lot.
Is there a wiper rebuilder someone has experience with to check this out? |

Couldn't this be corrected by changing the rotational position of one of the wiper arms below the windshield? The operaton beyond the wiper motor is completely mechanical.

I've tried moving the arms. The problem is for the passenger side, the normal sweep lowest point at the bottom of the windshield is lower than the park position by several inches. This is independent of the arm position.
The motor output is eccentric but the central rod's (has the slot cut) position depends on the linkage inside and the shape of the channel in the nylon gear that the park mechanism rides in and this determines the path of the output arm. |

Until the experts chime in, I believe that if replacing a single speed motor, the linkages & everything are different. You may need the whole enchilada...

This is a two speed motor with depressed park. The linkage I'm concerned about is internal to the motor and operates the central shaft during the park sequence. I believe the wiper transmission, or the rods and bellcranks attached to the ouput shaft are original.

The part number on the gear and eccentric shaft is 4907479 if anyone can identify which application this is for.

If you get the wiper linkage on the motor incorrectly it will drive the arm below the windshield. It's not hard to screw up.

It's all working well now. The old motor was for an impala. I found a correct one with p/n 5044503 and the gear profile is different. Park sequence is now perfect.

That's interesting. Glad you got it all fixed. When I bought my 62 Catalina, it didn't have a wiper motor at all. Just wires hanging. I found one for a 62 and just cleaned out the nasty old grease and cleaned it up. Has been working fine for many years now. They are pretty complex inside IMO.
