Default Cam Specs for a 366? Compression?

Anyone have any cam and compression specs for a 366?

I've dug through the archives and found some interesting results on lower compression for a 303 and Tom Nell's Latin Square article.

Nothing on cam specs for a 366.

Has me thinking about a 366 and a project which is FINALLY getting off the ground. I would love to get it right the first time.

Any thoughts, results or musings would be appreciated.

Mike

Are you going to use a 301 short deck block?

How can anyone offer suggestions when you have not posted up anything about the intended usage of this motor.

Will it be as close to as built for its original racing purposes ?

I owned a factory 366 NASCAR engine, had the factory cam in it but never bothered to check it out before selling. It was a solid roller and I think was General Kenetics.I would guess it was in the range of a RA IV spec.FWIW,366s ran RA IV heads and warrior intakes. There were rumered short deck 366 engineering engines but have never seen or actually talked to someone that had one.I built mine as a RA V.The build is on this site, the engine is now at the Throttle Stop.Tom

Great post, just one disagreement about it. "The Warrior Intake on 366 engines".

Garry Sr,
The one that was "never there" was Dale Hunt.
That leaves the "Other guy who didn't know sh**"
as our old buddy Ray Hunt.
Dale had a big fight with Ray some years ago and went off with his son and started a chevy focused
speed shop.

The "Warrior" intake was a name only. Doug Nash with Pontiac's help and money had the first units cast up.
A Ford engineer actually did the intake runner design,(Doug used to work for Ford as a plumber before he made it big).
Doug sold the manifold designs to a second company (SK Engineering) who still owns the rights to both the single 4 holley
and single 4 Quadrajet 4 bbl manifolds, and the dual quad tunnel ram manifold). Ray simply rented the tooling to produce a few manifolds when he could afford it. He did NO design work on any of the pieces. The "Warrior", I prefer to call it what it is "The Nash manifold" is a good design and was the best we had for years but a few people have enlarged the plenum for Higher rpm, larger motors, etc.
As Paul Harvey would say "And now you know the rest of the story". Tom V.

As Doug Nash was a personal friend, (Ford Skilled Traded Guy) before starting his company's Transmission stuff, He knew the real story. One of the group of Tom Nell/ Herb Adams/ Dudley McCully, race team "support parts suppliers". He knew how to get stuff made properly. RIP Doug.

But the newbys would not know who Doug Nash was or where he fit in the Pontiac race Parts "Flow Chart" so calling his intakes Warrior intakes (Ray and Dale had nothing to do with the intakes but sell them) is close enough for conversation posts.

Tom V.

And you are correct, the Camshafts were designed and made by Tom Nell/Herb Adams and General Kenetics, A race cam supplier.

Engine is being built by Jim Robertson for vintage racing.

Started as a Titus clone of the last two races of '70, but morphed when I found the 366 block. Also have the sun gear, cover and a RAV cam which is notched for the sun gear. Might be a good blank...

I have:
SK intake
RA IV heads
Crazy-cool converted Corvette distributor and TI boxes (Dave Bean said Herb brought a suitcase of them)
3.375 crank
180 degree headers - also crazy cool
Armando pan built for the pipes to cross under

Car is a '72 Bird with a bee-knees cage a la Jerry Schwartz design, watts link, lower spindles, Corvette brakes and tweaked suspension, like many did in 1970.

Goal is to be period correct in nearly every way, but a mish-mash of actual cars.

The Titus fenders and original build details took too much work to abandon and would not be accurate for the Adams car or Grand Am/NASCAR.

Thankfully I believe SVRA will allow the 366 in Group 6 GT. I'll be a back-marker so that should not be a problem...

I am on the hunt for parts and am starting to think about that.

Most articles I have read say they all used the same cam for the RA V engine.

This one shows the cam and specs:
RA V Story

My Cam page shows the RA V cam:

The RAV cam will not work with RAIV heads. Different valve layout.

Jeff,

I had assumed my special crank was a 303. I finally measured it and it's a 366. Opps. Adapt, overcome and pucker.

John,

What is the cam you mention? Was your car a drag car or road race? Any thoughts on road race specs for success?

Thanks to all for the help and direction.
