Default vinyl dash sticker/67 GTO

Question:
I am replacing the dash insert on my 67 gto. Mine had a real wood insert that was coming up in several places. I have a vinyl dash insert that I plan on using. Do you need to apply the sticker to a backing plate and then attach the backing plate to the instrument cluster or can you apply the sticker directly to the instrument cluster? Thanks.

The first time I changed mine I applied just the sticker to the dash. Over a short period time it shrunk and lifted around the round bezels. The second time I installed the over lay that was attached to the aluminum backing. It has lasted 4 years so far with no problem. I also have a new just vinyl one still in the never opened package. It has also shrunk.
