I’m really loving the ‘Close Ratio’ T-56 (2.66, 1.78, 1.30, 1:1, .80, .63) with 3.73s out back. Not a dead spot in any gear.
Loved my TKO-600 car, but the 1-2-3 drop from 2.87 to 1.89 to 1.28 seemed a touch wide, and I never made peace with the 1:1 - .64 OD drop. Seemed like the car was either spinning higher than I wanted in 4th or felt a little soft in 5th anywhere between 65 and 75 mph. |

Another of my cars thats a fun to drive is stock 1992 Corvette with a 700r4 and 2.59 gears, that this is surprisingly comfy , literally sips gas and with a removable targa top and its 20 gal fuel tank this thing is a perfect road trip car.... Actually did one around the 45 states and all 10 canadian provinces in it in 2014...yeah I got pulled over numerous times and got lucky numerous times |

When my 77TA was still in its prime( before the number7 exhaust lobe started going down...). It was a fun car to drive. The 7.6:1 400 was nothing like its predecessors. But the Pontiac engineers gave the tune. Either 16 or 18 degrees initial advance, and R45TSX plugs. Gapped at .060
The 400/Th350 with the 2.41 rear gear could get 20 MPG, on a good day, 22. I have parts for more than one displacement build. I may resurrect a stock (BUT slightly massaged) 400, for at least a while.

One of mine is a 64-Tempest-400 with a little cam(bought that way)
12-bolt posi 3:31 gear saginaw 4-speed with a 3:50 first gear works great and pretty fast two. My 64-olds F-85 a while a go had a low comp 400 and a 350 turbo and a 275 shot of n20 and 4:33 gear. On motor went 13:04 at 104 mph on the button it went 11:37 at 120 mph, That was A blast back then. and mt 62-Tempest with a allum rod allum headed Wenzler tunnel ram and two 750's 3:73 gear 350 turbo trans 7:22 lift cam on a 113 lsa 10:45@128 mph drow that in Drag 3;73 Week and theres Still more. I'll post up another build I'm getting ready to do 57 ponco wagon. GT |

In a Pontiac:
3.23 rear, ST-10 with 3.42 low Built before 5-speeds became common. In a non-Pontiac: 5.13 rear, 2.96 low gear 5-speed overdrive (5th 0.85) The 5.13 cut down on top speed, but 135 would get you a ticket almost anywhere Jon

Non Pontiac - and it really hurts to say this. Mid 90s Ford Explorer with 5.0, some sort of AOD, and couldnt tell you what gear. That drivetrain seemed like it could read your mind. Always in the right gear, always responsive. Until it got completely destroyed in a black ice incident.
Pontiac - dad's 53 studebaker with 400/th400 and 3.00 gear. Always a joy to drive until it gets hot. Those Studes have a tiny radiator, and retrofitting something else is truly an ordeal if you saw how the frontend went together.

I did a poor mans OD. My .030 over 455 with 96 heads and 041 cam with Rhodes lifters and 1,65 rockers has a cast iron T-10 with 3.43 first gear and a 2.73 rear. It acts like a 3 speed with overdrive. The engine has enough low end torque that can overcome any situation on the city streets with great highway manners.

Nash 5 speed trans, 2.75 rear gear, 9" Strange Center section and Moser Axles.
Final drive on the Nash (5th gear) is 1 to 1. Tom V.

Its interesting how much we liked somewhat milder set up with numerically low rear gears... proof that you dont need tremendous amounts of power in a car to be really enjoyable.

My current set up in my '64 GTO is the one I like the best.
Originally, I drove it with the stock 389, M20 and 3.23 open rear and 26.5 - 27" tires. Next I swapped in a 3.36 posi, which was eventually replaced with a 12 bolt 3.42 posi. After building a 462 and driving it with the 3.42's, I decided that I wanted less rear gear with the bigger motor. Swapped the 3.42's for 3.08's. This combo is the one I like the best as I do spend time on the Interstates going to shows (I go 4 hours one way every year). At some time in the future, I may consider a TKX with the wide ratio - 3.27 first gear and a .72 overdrive. This would help me out at the stop lights with the 3.27 first gear and on the Interstate with 2000 RPM at 70 MPH with the overdrive. |

1967 Impala SS.
327, 700-R4, 3.31 12 bolt diff. I did a complete restoration on the car and built the little 327 with super tight squish, factory cam and high compression. It EASILY managed pump gas w/o any issues anyplace and made great power for the CID. This helped produce a PERFECT combination in every area. With 3.31 rear gears and 3.07 first gear of the 700-R4 plus a custom built Precision Industries converter it was super-quick off the line and would knock down around 18mpgs around town and mid 20's on the highway running around 70-75 mph. It was a blast to drive and one of the cars that I sold over the years that I really miss.........
