Default Tinted Windshield?

Was the tinted windshield available separate with all other glass clear or did you get all tinted glass in 67. I'm considering replacing my original clear windshield. I have the original clear glass out. I could clean up the original or make life easy and replace with new tinted glass. Not concerned with number matches but want a "correct' look.

It was optional....None, windshield only or all.

Do yourself a favor Helmerrock... go with the tinted windshield even if none of the other glass is tinted. My windshield was broken last year and I went from clear to tinted. And I'm glad I did. Even tho the new tinted windshield is not date coded, it's still better than the clear one.

Safelight did the work and they even sealed the bottom channel that was rusted thru in a couple of spots. The sealer they used filled the holes and no more leaks. They even sprayed a rust killer on first and then coated the whole channel before they installed the windshield. Saved a lot of work for me.

How does the green tinted glass look installed? I'm debating between clear or tinted.

3- Choices on Windshields.

Full Clear.
Full Tint (SOFT-RAY).
Upper Shade/band, Tint.

All would be correct.

IMO; Full SR tint looks out of sync without the side glass tinted.
A full Clear piece will cost at least double as they are not very popular.
I went with the upper Tint/shade band and it helps with sun glare.

I love the factory tint myself..the factory called it Soft Ray....It's a very subtle tint. If you look at my photo below, you can only tell if you look at the trees through the glass and compare it to the trees ahead of the glass. And you have to consider, in this photo you are looking through two pieces of glass and you can still barely tell...

Thanks guys! I'm going soft ray now! I apologize for thread jacking.

I need all new glass for my 67 and saw Ames offers a complete glass package but its quite pricey. I also found complete glass packages on EBay for significantly less. Any input or opinions?

I agree with Greg on the look of the original Soft Ray. My car has factory a/c and I believe these usually came with tints all around (at least mine did). Subtle but nice.

I've had good luck with repro parts from National Parts Depot. They sell the repro tinted glass at reasonable prices. It may be a similar source to what our host sells or Ames carries.

I also see used pieces on Franks or here in the classifieds from time to time but they are limited to local pick-up.

Not sure I'd feel comfortable buying glass off of ebay for warranty reasons. Doubt you could get it replaced if it broke in shipping.

Both my '65 hardtop and '67 ragtop came with Soft Ray tint on the windshield only. I switched the '65 over to entirely tinted Soft Ray about 30 years ago when I found all the glass for $50 from an AC LeMans in the wrecking yard. Also got the metal fan shroud for $5 at that time. A guy convinced me that any of these cars look much better with the green tinted Soft Ray, and he was right. Still have the clear side glass for my '65 in storage, but it'll never go back into the car as long as I own it! Noticeable difference in comfort, glare, and interior temps. Plus, it looks killer!

Replaced my windshield a few years ago, I specified tinted, they said that's all they carried anyway....

Thumbs up Green Glass

My 66 GTO is a NON Air Condition hardtop with Soft Ray "Full Tint" on all windows.

It looks especially great with the all Cameo Ivory paint.

Window sticker reads, GLASS - SOFT RAY - ALL WINDOWS (Code 531 $30.32)

Ditto.
IMO, all these cars look better with tint but there are some cars that just don't look right without it...White is one of them.

I'll be replacing the windshield in my 67 GTO in a few months. In my search I did't have any luck finding a "soft ray" fully tinted windshield. Everything I looked at had the tinted band at the top only. Any source for the full tint glass?

SafeLight. Windshield is tinted with the dark tinted band at the top.

Tho no codes like the original windshields have.

I don't have the link but there is a website that sells the glass that's the same as back when. Tinted and clear for all the glass.

I bought all new glass for my '67 a few years ago from Auto City Classic - http://www.autocityclassic.com/

My car came from the factory with a tinted windshield but when I replace the glass I went with tinted all around. It looks fantastic and fit perfectly.

It's the same glass PY, Ames, etc. sell except for a fraction of the price. They have clear, green tinted, and gray tinted. They can also do date codes. I think I paid about $850 for all 8 pieces of glass delivered to my house.

Just looking around for glass, this is the cheapest but I'm not sure how i really feel about going through eBay. Granted I do purchase quite a few things through eBay and haven't had any real issues.
