Default Speedometer

My speedometer rocks (flucuates) about 10 RPM. Think it a trans, speed cable of the speedometer. It started and now is worsening.

Thanks

Probably needs some lube - try white lithium grease or graphite. Nothing too heavy or it will clog up the cable. Disconnect from the back of the speedometer and spray into the cable it will work it's way down. If you can get to the other end at the trans you can do there also.

If you screw the cable connection off the speedometer end, you can pull out the rotating core. Coat it with light grease and re-install. While you have it out, look for kinks--even slight kinks can cause the problem you have.

Hardest part of this fix is getting under the dash to remove the cable. On early GTO's, this is not difficult.

Thanks!
Will do. I plan on taking the dash apart anyway.

Think I should clean it to rid of all the old gunk?

Definitely remove the center rotating flexible shaft of the entire cable, & clean it & put on a light coat of grease. Some people use white lith, but nowadays there are other good options. I like the gray molly graphite. & there are modern synth greases available now which were not in the 1960s, that are a lot more durable & a LOT more slippery, way more than what was available back then.

Default Cable fix.....we'll see if this works

I took the cable out this morning and cleaned the cable with gas and a towel being very careful to not kink the cable. I then lightly lubed with Lith grease. Rocks very little now and I think it should smooth out more once I drive it for a while. If it does not correct 100% I probably will repeat with a lube approved for this purpose

Default Works good for now

I pulled out the cable and cleaned it with gas. Lubed with Lith grease. Pretty steady so far.
